"BRB AT BRAGG MIDDLE SCHOOL" ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš€

Yesterday, Birmingham Rocket Boy's Club Officers Don Coker, Carol Witherspoon, Club Founder Ron Witherspoon, and Club Member Randy DeArman, Made Their 20 Year Visit To The Bragg Middle School In Gardendale, Alabama. Their Visit Was Strictly Business As They Checked In At The School's Main Office At 7:30 am To Get Their Visitor Passes. They Then Proceeded To The Schools Athlectic Field Where They Set Up The Club's Rocket Launch Equipment And Then Were Off To Meet Mrs. Warren And Her 8th Grade Science Students Who Were Waiting For Us In Her Classroom. For The Past 20 Years Mrs. Warren Has invited BRB To Bragg To Assist Her Middle School Science Students In Building And Flying Their Own Rocket For Their Final Grade. In The Classroom DeArman And Witherspoon Assisted Mrs. Warren In Helping The Student's Prepare Their Estes Kit Built Rockets For Launch, Giving Them Safety Instructions, And Answering Any Questions They Posed. After All The Student's Rockets Were Prepped And Ready, Mrs. Warren Lined Them Up And We All Proceeded Out To The Launch Pads Where Don And Carol Were Waiting. Don Manned The Remote Launch Control System And Carol, Randy, And Ron, Assisted The Students In Safely And Correctly Loading Their Rockets On The Pads For Launch. The Students Were Excited About Being Allowed To Push The Launch Control Button And To See Their Creation Lift Off The Pad For The First Time. Mrs. Warren And All Of Us Agreed That The Launch Was A Big Success. After Launching Students Rockets For Most Of The Day, With A One Hour Launch Break In Between, At 2:30 pm We Loaded Up The Club Equipment And Headed For Home. It Was A Great Day For Bragg And BRB. ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ™‚ยฎ๏ธ

I have been blessed to have been apart of UAB Rocketry and Capstone payload project this school year and mentor and technical advisor.

This is a first year NASA USLI (University Student Launch Initiative) hosted by NAR at the Von Braun Center and Bragg Farms in Huntsville. The requirements were to build a rocket to carry a payload that upon landing, gather 50ml of soil, run soil analysis, and send the analysis via radio to the collection station. In addition, the rocket had to ascend to between 4,000 and 6,000 feet, deploy drogue and main and land. Think certification flight. The team met all of the NASA milestone requirements the week before and permitted to compete in the competition. At the Von Braun Center, the team had to pass the NAR LRR (Launch Readiness Review) with L3CC members. They were prepared and answered every question and left the review cleared for flight.

I could not be more proud of this team! 20 other teams across the country and beyond did not meet the milestones and could not compete in the launch! 30 teams did and UAB was there with Auburn, Florida, Purdue, West Virginia, and a host of other high academic universities.

The team has already elected officers for next year! Consider getting involved!

Enjoy the photos from the competition!

Birmingham Rocket Boys next launch is scheduled for this Saturday, April 18th.

However, the State Forestry Commission issued a Statewide Fire Alert today through at least April 20th, but is likely to be extended.

I am not scrubbing the launch today, but if the Fire Alert is still in effect, the launch will be scrubbed. Look for another update here Thursday or Friday.

Good morning BRB. I was asked yesterday to assist the Moody, Alabama High School TARC Team in their final attempts to turn in a qualifying score for this year's National TARC Competition. I joined Moody Science Teacher Mr. Brian Usry, his High school TARC Team Students, along with their TARC Team Mentor Mr. Rus Hardy for a day long student rocket launch. Being unable to launch their rockets on their Moody school property, the students were given permission to launch on privately owned property in the area. The site bordered on an abandoned airstrip and was perfect for the 4 member rocket team's test flights. I personally commended these students for their skill in building, equipping and successfully launching their team rocket. I also commended their Science Teacher Mr. Usry for his professionalism, enthusiasm and leadership of his TARC Team Students. Chosen to be the team Mentor, Mr. Rus Hardy has had years of experience working with high school TARC teams and has successfully led 2 teams to the national finals. As a friend, Mr. Hardy is an expert rocket builder and flyer and has served as a past BRB Education Director and club member. I assisted in timing the teams test and qualifying flights, and as an official NAR member, I was charged with signing off on all the TARC team documents for certification. The team completed their last qualifying flight around 6 pm and Mr. Usry had Domino's Pizza delivered to the site for all of us to enjoy. It was a great day. ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ™‚ยฎ๏ธ

No rain, no wind, it was sunshine, and blue skies. It was a beautiful day for flying rockets and we had a nice crowd that showed up ready to punch some holes in the February sky. From as far as Montgomery, Alabama they came and we had an awesome fun-filled day flying rockets. I've just posted the pictures I took at the launch, and you are welcome to add any you took here in the comments. Several of you said you would be returning to our March launch and expressed a desire to become members of our club. We would love to have you join us as a club member, or if you just decide to remain a casual flyer. We are glad and honored that you chose to visit us, and all of us here at BRB look forward to your hopefully soon return. God bless you all. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ™‚ยฎ๏ธ
