With increasing talk, including from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, about weaning the Jewish state off U.S. defense aid in favor of more collaborative military initiatives, Johnston, the association president, said the idea is right, but calling for immediacy in fulfilling it is wrong.

“We’re going to be looking to Israel, to that full-running technology called Iron Beam, to what has worked in these wars, to what’s working against the all-powerful drone technology,” Johnston told JNS.

There is increased collaboration described in the last U.S. defense policy bill, she said.

“We’re not pushing Israel away. We’re actually elevating what needs to happen in the future because the United States actually needs to build with Israel, to work with Israel to build our own defense systems,” Johnston told JNS. “That’s a little bit of a shift in where things have been. I think it will be done over time and appropriately.”

Johnston also said that the association has played a role in combating antisemitism, using the levers that the organization has developed in Congress.

“The antisemitism that’s roiling the world today and impacting our government leaders and politics is at a different level,” she said. “I think USIEA has played an incredibly important educational role with the senior leaders of Congress, who really are, in many ways, holding down the fort.”

Many leaders in Congress have avoided voting for any type of boycott or withdrawal of aid for Israel, but support for Israel appears to be dwindling in the Capitol, most conspicuously of late on the Democratic side of the aisle.

Johnston told JNS she believes the phenomenon to be cyclical, and it could be much worse but for strong advocacy for the Jewish state on the Hill.

“We will see a changing tide. Even as we’re at a fever pitch in the negative, you still have, by and large, the Congress in support of Israel,” Johnston said. “That’s due to leadership voicing, guiding, speaking into, understanding the holistic viewpoint” that the association shares about the U.S.-Israel relationship. On this day, 85 years ago, a symbol became a weapon of persecution.

On September 1, 1941, N**i official Reinhard Heydrich issued a decree requiring Jews age six and older in N**i Germany and its annexed territories to wear a yellow Star of David in public. It was another calculated step in the systematic isolation, dehumanization, and persecution of Europe’s Jews.

The N**is did not begin with extermination. They began by identifying Jews, separating them from society, stripping away their rights, and teaching the public to see their Jewish neighbors as less than human.

We remember because history demands vigilance. Eighty-five years later, we must confront antisemitism wherever it appears and never allow hatred, propaganda, or silence to pave the way for persecution again.

A new ADL study reveals a deeply troubling reality for Jewish members of U.S. teachers unions.

Surveying 307 Jewish union members, the study found widespread antisemitism, anti-Zionist rhetoric, and hostility toward those who speak up. Nearly 74% said union statements that fail to condemn Hamas and the October 7 atrocities are a problem, while 73.6% said they feel the need to self-censor in union spaces.

The findings go deeper: 51.8% have witnessed minimization or denial of October 7 atrocities, 48.9% have heard “Zionist” used as a slur, and among those who reported antisemitism to union leadership, 69.1% were not at all satisfied with the response.

Teachers unions should be places where educators can work together—not environments where Jewish members feel pressured to hide their identity or remain silent.

A passenger who flew from Seattle to Tel Aviv found a handwritten note inside her checked luggage reading “F*** Israel.”

Los Angeles native Noa Sabar Dvoskin, 48, who traveled last weekend with her three children on Alaska Airlines from Seattle to Los Angeles and then connected to an El Al flight to Tel Aviv, discovered the note inside her suitcase while unpacking on Monday.

The incident comes six months after an El Al flight from Los Angeles to Tel Aviv was delayed after ground staff discovered “Free Palestine” stickers on airport equipment, prompting the flight to depart without passengers’ baggage amid security concerns that the luggage had been tampered with.
