A few weeks ago I was walking into a store, when a man (who I’ll refer to as S), stopped me and asked me can I buy him something to eat. I said, “Sure,” with no hesitation. I went into the store to get my items, as well as some food and drinks for him. I gave him the items and he was so grateful. Over the next couple of weeks, I saw him multiple times and we greeted each other. Each time, I asked him is there anything I can get for him and he replied, “No.”
This past Friday, I saw S again and he stopped me and said, “Out of all the people who come in and out of this store, you’re the only one who stops and speaks to me and ask me if I need anything.” I smiled and I told him that it’s my duty to lend a hand to those in need.
That day we talked for a long time about his life, how he became homeless, his family and much more. We even talked about the organization and the organization’s vision. He told me that someone picks him up everyday to do random jobs to make money. Knowing that he’s trying to get back on his feet, I couldn’t let the moment pass me. I asked him what size clothes he wear, etc. He wouldn’t tell me at first. He simply said, “I don’t need any clothes. I wash my clothes in the creek everyday.” I said, “No. Tell me your clothing size.” After going back and forth with him, he finally told me his clothing size. I then started asking him about other miscellaneous items that he uses and he gave me the same push back. He eventually told me. I then told him that we, HomeFull, would bring those items to him that he desperately needs. He kept telling me not to do so, but I told him I would.
Moral of the story:
You never know where life may take you. You might have it all today, but lose it all tomorrow. Humble yourself. Treat others with respect. Show kindness. Because at any second this could be you too......
