Josephine Alexis Powell - A Civil Rights Pioneer and Foot Soldier- in 1962 after hearing about the Arkansas 8 and the evils they endured My mother decided it was time to get involved! Believing that we should have equal rights and education so being a straight -A student she tested and was selected [1] one of the top [3] three students to integrate the Birmingham School System. September 1963 Josephine Powell Along with Patricia Marcus Integrated All White Westend High School! Year after that she was [1] of three African Americans enrolled at the University of Alabama Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Callie Cora W. Powell – eldest of [16] Sixteen children not finishing school to help in the family was very inspirational to me starting my own Business, at a very young age my Grand-mother started me Selling Kool-Aid Freeze cups from the house every summer. Not having a lot of experience in business there were things I had to learn later, but I am very happy she was part of my life when she was. Those Summers coming here and leaving with money in my pockets when I went home was one of the best feelings in my life and I owe it to this wonderful woman.
Both of these women were very helping and giving to others, I’ve never seen them not feed someone that was hungry even if they didn’t have much themselves Their door and kitchen was always open to anyone that needed them. I’ve seen my mother bring people off the street feed them, let them shower, and wash their clothes for them. I’ve seen my grandmother put together a box of food if she knew someone in the neighborhood was struggling.
So because of these two wonderful, and giving women I am dedicating this Non-Profit Foundation in their honor. So I can give in the manor that they gave.
