West Goldwire Neighborhood

West Goldwire Neighborhood West Goldwire is one of the 99 neighborhoods in Birmingham, Alabama. He acquired 100 acres in 1899 near Hillman. The chemical plant ceased operating in 1940.

The community origins began with Eugene Ramiro Grasselli, founder of Grasselli Chemical Company of Ohio in 1839. A 1900 Birmingham News article regarding “Recent Happenings at Powderly" mentioned the new chemical plant and the great rejoicing in the community over the prospects of new employment opportunities. The Grasselli Chemical Company maintained a “social welfare” program similar to the Tenn

essee Coal & Iron Company (TCI) by providing housing to benefit its workforce. Annexation followed, and the area today represents one of Birmingham’s twenty-three communities. This community consists of Grasselli Heights, Hillman, Hillman Park, Industrial Center Tarpley City, and West Goldwire. These neighborhoods are surrounded by or near other neighborhoods that share the same industrial-related history. A significant asset is the lasting impact of religious and educational institutions within these communities that garners a need for historical research and preservation. The proximity of these neighborhoods located on the Northside of Red Mountain Park is within walking and mountain bike trails with signage. For history aficionados, there are three historical Iron Ore Mining Sites.
