If charter schools are public schools, what actually makes them different?

Quick answer: the difference is in how they are designed and operated, not in whether they are public.

Public charter schools are publicly funded, tuition-free, and accountable for student outcomes, but they are given greater flexibility to build their academic programs, school culture, and approach around the needs of the students and communities they serve.

However, understand this: that flexibility comes with accountability! Charter schools operate under an approved charter that outlines what they have committed to accomplish and how their performance will be measured. So when you hear the word charter, don't think private school.

Think: Public school. More flexibility. Clear accountability. A different model for serving students.
