Church of the Reconciler Our mission is to restore people to loving relationships with themselves, with their community, and with God.

We're a United Methodist Mission Church whose congregation is composed primarily of those who are unhoused, transient, or struggling with the consequences of poverty. We have a wonderful and caring staff and host many volunteers from partner churches, amazing organizations, and individuals.

• Our service is at 9:30am every Sunday Morning
• Bible Study is open to the public every Monday and Wednesday at 10:00am in the sanctuary.
• Community Table is a fun and intentional spiritual time that can be anything from music to prayer to games; it's every Tuesday at 10:00am
• Sacred Musing is our Brew Pub Study Group that meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. Come hang out and let's chat and learn!
• Bring us your #5 plastic so we can recycle it in our shop! We usually have sack lunches or meals to give to those in need. We would be overjoyed if you'd consider joining us as a volunteer or giving to our cause of helping the unhoused and eliminating homelessness from Birmingham.

Tell Tony happy birthday today! (Or when you see him next). Tony is a veteran and a long time member of Church of the Reconciler. He loves our community, encourages our staff, and we all love him! Happy birthday, Tony. God bless you.

Tony wears a black jacket, a black shirt, a skull and cross bones on his ball cap (a little surprising given his warm smile!), and a wooden cross necklace and a black, yellow, red, and green beaded cross necklace. He sits in our sanctuary on a busy day.

“Healing and Vulnerability go hand in hand” — Sharrif Simmons
We’re so grateful for Sharrif Simmons and UAB Arts in Medicine partnering with us to share music and poetry in a safe and encouraging environment. We find this work with him brings us joy, tears, memories, strength.

Today Sharrif visited our partner nonprofit Community on the Rise Community On The Rise for their “Wellness Wednesday,” a program for their staff wellness and bonding.

Kinda Chic to learn someone’s childhood prayers. In prayer circle Pastor Sarah noticed that one of the members quoted from “Now I lay me down to sleep…” differently from how she learned it as a child. That was pretty cool because she remixed a version of it for her own kids, too. So in prayer circle last week Pastor Sarah brought the three versions she had learned so far: One from childhood, one from a prayer circle member, and the one she taught her own kids. Then, while we were talking about these, another member shared another slightly different way that his grandmother had taught him to pray “Now I lay me down to sleep…” So here are all of our versions. Feel free to share or tell us your own!

Text from Images:
“Now I lay me down to sleep (a remix). I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should live another day, I pray the Lord to guide my way (Remix by Verna’s mom. Now I lay me down to sleep. My precious soul the Lord to keep. If I should die before I wake, my precious soul the Lord to take (Remix by Dancer’s grandmother). Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my heart to keep. I thank God for this good day. Now help me sleep the night away (Remix by Pastor Sarah).”

“Original” (?) Prayer: “Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.

In each remix we see something important. Verna’s mom taught her that the Lord is there not just to keep her soul, but also to guide her way every day. Dancer’s grandmother taught him that his soul (and every person’s) is precious! Pastor Sarah taught her kids that each night’s sleep is a gift from God.

description: The image of each slide is the same: A Dark blue background with golden outlines of clouds and stars and large white text of the prayers.

Have you heard we make a pretty mean PB & J?
We love starting each day with physical & spiritual nourishment with our beloved community members. Most of the time our sack lunches are provided by our awesome partners in ministry, but sometimes we need to supplement with some in-house work.

Thanks to everyone who helps love, encourage, and serve our community!

Pictured here: John, Rodney, and Pastor Dylan assembling PB & J and paper bag lunches in our church kitchen.

What if instead of complaining about what schools are not doing, we learned from what they are doing?
Our August sermon series, “Get Schooled in Church,” is on learning tips from K-12 education for our life of faith and discipleship. We welcome you to celebrate schools by wearing clothing that shows your school spirit in church this week and any Sunday in August!
This Sunday we kick off our series with how schools build a community ethic. Kids have fun living into their school’s values, and we can have fun living into the community values set by Jesus. “Don’t Think You’re So Smart!” It’s in the Bible. Romans 12:16 (CEB).

We’re proud of Lorenzo, “Lo” for telling the whole conference today that what he appreciates about Church of the Reconciler is to experience LOVE there. Lo is the most recent member to officially join the church, and we love being present to his Faith journey and being blessed by his gifts of prayer and service. Lo said, “The love I feel at Church of the Reconciler makes me want to go out and love others.” That’s what it’s all about. Thank you, Lo! You were a great speaker today.
