Bird City Century II Development Foundation is proud to share that our Executive Director, Teryn Carmichael, has been nominated and reelected to serve a second term on the Kansas Association of Community Foundations (KACF) Board of Directors!

KACF connects community foundations across Kansas to share knowledge, strengthen philanthropy, and build stronger, more sustainable communities. Through collaboration, education, and advocacy, KACF helps community foundations expand their impact in areas like childcare, housing, education, economic development, and support for local nonprofits.

We’re excited to see Teryn continue contributing to this statewide network of community leaders while bringing new ideas, valuable connections, and opportunities back to Bird City and northwest Kansas.

At BCCII, we believe strong communities are built through collaboration, investment, and a shared commitment to the future. We’re proud to see that commitment represented at the state level!

Wondering where we’ve been? Thanks for asking…we’d love to tell you!

We packed our bags and headed to Wichita this week for the Kansas Association of Community Foundations (KACF) Conference!

This year’s theme was “Lead with Confidence. Grow with Purpose.” And that’s exactly what we went to do!

We spent time learning alongside community foundation professionals from across Kansas, hearing from great speakers, sharing ideas, and exploring new ways to strengthen the work we do back home in Bird City.

From strengthening foundation operations and finances to donor development, governance, and the unique challenges of rural philanthropy, there was plenty to learn and bring back with us!

One of the best reminders? While every community is different, we’re all working toward the same goal: building stronger communities and creating opportunities that last for generations.

We’re coming home with fresh ideas, new connections, and a few more things to add to our “things we want to try at BCCII” list. Because apparently, the to-do list wasn’t long enough already!

We’re grateful for opportunities like this to keep learning, growing, and finding new ways to serve Bird City and the surrounding community. 🌾💙

Meet Kolbie! 💙

This post is a little delayed, but nonetheless, we wanted to take a moment to recognize Kolbie Leach and welcome her as part of the BCCII team this year through Cheylin’s Work/Study Program!

Kolbie is spending time in our office getting a firsthand look at what it means to work in the nonprofit world, from the behind-the-scenes planning and everyday tasks to the bigger projects that help move our community forward.

We love having the opportunity to show her the work we do, introduce her to the many ways a community foundation can make a difference, and help her see how the time, effort, and resources invested in our community today can create opportunities for tomorrow.

Programs like Work/Study give students valuable experience beyond the classroom, and we’re happy to play a part in helping Kolbie learn, grow, and explore what her future might hold.

Join us in welcoming Kolbie to the team! We’re glad to have her in our office this year and look forward to all the learning and experiences ahead!

Happy Birthday, Judy! 🎉

Yesterday was Judy’s birthday, and naturally, she spent it doing what she does best — being an absolute rockstar for Century II.

While we were busy getting ready for our Match Day meeting with our organizations, Judy was right there making sure things were ready, greeting people with her always-present smile, helping wherever she could, and doing all the little things that make a big difference.

If you’ve walked through the Foundation office, chances are you’ve been greeted by Judy’s smile, kindness and willingness to help. She is one of those people who makes everyone feel welcome — and we’re pretty lucky to have her in our foundation family!

Judy, we hope you know how much you are appreciated, not just on your birthday, but every day. Thank you for all you do for BCCII and for the people we serve. We hope your birthday was as wonderful as you are! ❤️

September 11, 2001.

There are words from that day that have stayed with us for 25 years:

“Today, everyone is a New Yorker.”

On a day when our country was divided by fear, grief, and uncertainty, something else happened—we became a community.

People stopped to help. Strangers stood beside strangers. First responders ran toward danger. Americans opened their homes, gave blood, prayed, served, and simply asked, “What can I do?”

Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, the families forever changed, and the countless people who answered the call to serve in the days and years that followed.

We also remember what happened in the days immediately after: Americans came together.

From the largest city to the smallest town, we learned again that community matters. That we are stronger when we look out for one another. That when something happens to one of us, it matters to all of us.

Twenty-five years later, may we never forget the lives lost—or the spirit of compassion, courage, and unity that followed.

Today, everyone is still a New Yorker.

We remember. We honor. We serve. 🇺🇸

A small town, a big-time athlete, and a legacy in the making! 🏀🏐 Taylor McCarty has put Cheylin and Bird City in the spotlight with her record-breaking success in two sports. Next year, she’ll take her talents to Missouri State. Way to go, Taylor! 💙

As her final season with Cheylin High School arrives, McCarty has made a name for herself, holding just about every school record in two sports.

One of the most important things we can have in a small community is something that’s easy to take for granted until it’s gone—a grocery store.

That’s why the Bird City Century II Development Foundation is proud to invest in the Bird City Hometown Market and help ensure it has the equipment and resources needed to serve our community for years to come. Most recently, the Foundation purchased and helped facilitate the installation of new freezers for the store.

But the Foundation doesn’t run the grocery store and that’s where we are incredibly fortunate.

Chris and Andrea Thomson do.

They work hard every day to keep the Hometown Market stocked, running, and providing our community with the food, household items, and products we need without having to leave Bird City. Their commitment to making this work in a small community is something we truly appreciate.

The Foundation’s role is to help provide the infrastructure and investment that keeps this community asset strong. Chris and Andrea’s role is to put in the long hours, make the business work, and serve our community day after day.

It takes both—and we are very grateful for this partnership.

We are incredibly blessed to have a grocery store in Bird City, and we’re even more fortunate to have a young couple who believes in this community enough to work hard to keep it here.

Thank you, Chris and Andrea, for all you do. We’re proud to invest in the Hometown Market and even prouder to have you behind the counter.
