A small town, a big-time athlete, and a legacy in the making! 🏀🏐 Taylor McCarty has put Cheylin and Bird City in the spotlight with her record-breaking success in two sports. Next year, she’ll take her talents to Missouri State. Way to go, Taylor! 💙

As her final season with Cheylin High School arrives, McCarty has made a name for herself, holding just about every school record in two sports.

One of the most important things we can have in a small community is something that’s easy to take for granted until it’s gone—a grocery store.

That’s why the Bird City Century II Development Foundation is proud to invest in the Bird City Hometown Market and help ensure it has the equipment and resources needed to serve our community for years to come. Most recently, the Foundation purchased and helped facilitate the installation of new freezers for the store.

But the Foundation doesn’t run the grocery store and that’s where we are incredibly fortunate.

Chris and Andrea Thomson do.

They work hard every day to keep the Hometown Market stocked, running, and providing our community with the food, household items, and products we need without having to leave Bird City. Their commitment to making this work in a small community is something we truly appreciate.

The Foundation’s role is to help provide the infrastructure and investment that keeps this community asset strong. Chris and Andrea’s role is to put in the long hours, make the business work, and serve our community day after day.

It takes both—and we are very grateful for this partnership.

We are incredibly blessed to have a grocery store in Bird City, and we’re even more fortunate to have a young couple who believes in this community enough to work hard to keep it here.

Thank you, Chris and Andrea, for all you do. We’re proud to invest in the Hometown Market and even prouder to have you behind the counter.

We stepped away from the office for a couple of days…and came back with a whole lot of ideas! 💡

We had the privilege of attending the KEYS 2026 Conference in Manhattan this week hosted by Network Kansas.

It was one of those conferences where you leave with full notebooks, new connections, fresh perspective, and plenty to talk about on the drive home.

The keynote speakers were outstanding, the breakout sessions were excellent, and we loved hearing from people across Kansas who are doing creative and innovative things in their own communities.

We're grateful for the opportunity to learn, connect, and represent Cheyenne County E-Community - and we're even more excited to bring what we learned back home to Bird City and Cheyenne County.

Now…we're back in the office and ready to put some of those ideas to work! 👏

Last week, our Executive Director had the opportunity to attend the Kansas Association of Community Foundations (KACF) Board Retreat as part of her service on the KACF Board of Directors.

The retreat brought board members together to reflect on the organization's impact, discuss future priorities, and explore ways to strengthen KACF so it can continue providing exceptional resources, education, and advocacy for community foundations across Kansas.

Serving in this statewide leadership role allows us to bring fresh ideas, valuable partnerships, and innovative best practices back to Bird City and Northwest Kansas. We are proud to have our Executive Director representing the Bird City Century II Development Foundation and advocating for the important role community foundations play in strengthening rural communities across our state.
