Hair of the Dog Canine Halfway House

Hair of the Dog Canine Halfway House We save dogs from dangerous situations and help people rehome their dogs by coordinating with rescues to find loving, permanent homes for them.

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit In November of 2015 a neighbor asked me to help someone she knew catch a dog that had gotten loose from her, as she was losing her property and didn't want the dog to have to be shot. We found out later that the dog was a standard poodle who had gotten loose quite early on in his life and had lived there on the property for sometime without interaction or socialization

and that the woman was a "breeder". We caught the dog, but it took a long time and the help of my whole family. He was in poor shape, would not make eye contact and we were not sure he could be rehabilitated to be a family pet. The big Fluffy Dog Rescue out of TN helped me know what to do to catch him and they took him and his 'breeder mate' that the woman later turned over to us. After that, it was just one dog after another that needed help. Dogs hit by cars, dumped, abandoned, starving, caught in traps, left on properties after the owners moved. Litters of puppies that people could not afford, dogs living out by the highway..you name it, we saw it and did our best to help. Cotton, the poodle is now a therapy dog. If I had been a gambler, I would have bet against him, and I would have lost. He taught me that there is potential in every dog...and this has become my passion.

Susan is driving to work.
She sees a scared, skinny dog near a busy road.

She pulls over.
The dog won’t let her get close.
She has no leash.
No crate.
A job she’ll get fired from if she’s late.
A no-pets apartment.
Zero experience handling scared strays.

So she does what she can do.

She takes a clear photo.
She videos the location.
She posts:
“Brown male dog near Maple & 3rd. Seen at 7:42am. Very scared. Wouldn’t approach.”

She also leaves a message with animal control
with the exact location and time.

Within minutes, the comments roll in:

“WHY DIDN’T YOU TAKE HIM?!”
“So you just LEFT HIM THERE???”
“If that were me I’d NEVER drive away.”
“Wow. Some people really don’t care about animals.”

Susan deletes the post.
She feels sick.
Embarrassed.
Ashamed.

A week later, she sees another stray.

This time…
she keeps driving.

No photo.
No post.
No call to animal control.
No lead.

Let’s be clear:

Susan was not the problem.
The comment section was.

A photo + location + time stamp = a lead.
A call to animal control = a lead.
Your meltdown = zero help and one less Good Samaritan next time.

Not everyone can:
grab a scared dog
risk a bite
violate their lease
be late to work
or instantly morph into a fully funded rescue operation on the side of the road.

This is real life.
Not a Hallmark movie where everything works out in 90 seconds.

Who helped the dog more here
Susan… or the people attacking her?

If this were your lost dog,
would you want fewer sightings posted
or every possible lead?

Shame doesn’t save dogs.
It just trains people to stop helping.
