STIC Advocates for the Latonya Reeves Freedom Act

The Southern Tier Independence Center (STIC) is proud to advocate for the Latonya Reeves Freedom Act, legislation that would strengthen the rights of people with disabilities to live independently and receive long-term services and supports in the community setting of their choice.

The bill honors the legacy of Latonya Reeves, a disability rights advocate who fought for the freedom to live in her community rather than being forced into an institution. The legislation would strengthen protections against discrimination and help ensure that people with disabilities have meaningful access to community-based services and supports.
Independent living is a civil right. Choice matters. Community matters.

We encourage our community, allies, and advocates to learn more about the Latonya Reeves Freedom Act and make their voices heard.

The Latonya Reeves Freedom Act is bipartisan and bicameral civil rights legislation that addresses the injustice of people who need Long Term Services and Supports (LTSS) being forced into institutions.

The Southern Tier Independence Center (STIC) is joining Broome County for the 7th Annual “Chalk the Walk, Have the Talk” campaign, helping spread messages of hope, connection, and awareness throughout our community.

This year’s theme is: “The world is brighter with you in it.” From September 10th through September 20th 2026, schools, businesses, local campuses, organizations, and community members across Broome County are coming together to fill sidewalks with colorful drawings and messages of hope all in support of su***de prevention and mental health awareness.
STIC believes that every person deserves to feel valued, supported, included, and connected. Sometimes a simple message can make a difference!

Happy DSP Appreciation Week!

There are so many things DSPs do that never make it onto a checklist.

The encouragement when someone is trying something for the first time. The patience when a day doesn't go as planned. The celebration of a goal finally reached. The laughter shared over something completely ordinary. The quiet moments when simply being there is what someone needs. And the every day advocacy that helps make sure a person's voice and choices are heard. 🌟

💙 A BIG thank you to our United Way Day of Caring volunteers!

We’re so grateful to everyone who came together for United Way Day of Caring! Your time, energy, and willingness to lend a helping hand made a meaningful difference in our community.

Our volunteers tackled some much needed projects in our Food Pantry and Clothing Closet, sorting, organizing, and cleaning. And they got a LOT done!
