Did you know our region has a long history of social and health activism? 📣

The 1830s and 1840s saw an explosion of moral and religious movements, many of them centered right here in Upstate New York! They included the abolition, women's suffrage, temperance, and the often-overlooked anti-to***co movement. This movement opposed to***co use on the grounds that farming practices hurt the environment and that the habit was expensive, especially when factoring in the damage to clothes and furniture! Reports also began to tie to***co use with health problems like cancer and the addictive qualities of ni****ne were on display. Even President John Quincy Adams wrote about how hard it was to quit!

200 years later, we know a lot more about addiction, the health effects of to***co use, and the lies the to***co industry spread to keep selling their products. Broome County Health Department is proud to foster a new generation of reformers with our Reality Check Youth Program and create to***co-free spaces! We had a great time attending the Johnson City CSD Civics Fair last night, where students showcased their hard work and research!

Working alongside Broome County Health Department staff and Prevention Coalition of Broome County staff, students explored factors that may influence why young people begin va**ng or using substances and developed ideas for how schools and communities can better support youth.

It’s always encouraging to see students engaging in meaningful conversations, researching real community issues, and presenting thoughtful, solution-focused ideas to create positive change.

Last week, our Reality Check youth were busy taking action for Take Down To***co Day right here in Binghamton! 💪🚭

Youth led a to***co litter cleanup, working alongside the Broome County Sheriff's Office Community Engagement officer to help keep our community clean and raise awareness about the environmental impact of to***co waste.

After the cleanup, the group gathered at Crowbar Arcade to celebrate their newly adopted comprehensive smoke-free policy, protecting both patrons and staff from secondhand smoke. 👏

This work is about more than picking up litter; it’s about standing up to the to***co industry, supporting healthier spaces, and making a real difference locally.

A big thank you to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and Crowbar Arcade for partnering with our youth and supporting a healthier Broome County!
