Binghamton Sertoma Club

Binghamton Sertoma Club Since 1928, the Binghamton Sertoma Club has proudly served its community as a leading charitable, civic organization. for over 25 years.

One longstanding cause has been Camp Sertoma - a labor of love since its purchase in 1956. The Binghamton Sertoma Club raised the funds to purchase the camp’s original 25 acres, some members mortgaging their homes to assist. Now a 110-acre camp, located in Kirkwood, it offers day programs and residential (week long) programming with an emphasis on serving children who otherwise would be unable to

attend camp. Despite record-level attendance of campers and an extended season, the camp annually challenges the Club to support its capital and operational enhancements. In addition, the Club is working with camp leadership to focus on supporting children with communication disabilities attend camp with trained speech/hearing staff and/or interpretive equipment. Each year, the Club takes on a variety of fundraising activities to support its namesake. Its premier fundraiser established in 1982, the “Million Dollar Antique Show,” is the largest antique show in Southern New York State. The Club boasts sponsorship of an annual scholarship for high school students in the Binghamton high school districts. Eligible students are those with a documented communication disability or those who plan to study speech and/or hearing rehabilitation. Scholarship recipients are announced in May – “Better Speech and Hearing Month”. This year Sertoma will launch the “Wise Ears” program, which promotes education regarding noise induced hearing loss. The Binghamton Sertoma Club has an established history of collaborative community service. Joining forces with other local chapters, this Club supported worthy causes such as the Sertoma Speech and Hearing Clinics at the former Rehabilitation Services Inc. Sertoma is an international organization of more than 650 clubs sharing in the belief that universal communication, whether heard, seen or spoken, is the key to human understanding. The Binghamton Sertoma Club meets Tuesdays at the Binghamton Club and guests are always welcome.

On March 12, the Club held it's annual Freedom Banquet that celebrates our Service to Mankind and Sertoman of the Year award winners in addition to our essay winners from the Binghamton Boys & Girls Club.

Our Service to Mankind award is the highest honor Sertoma can bestow on a nonmember and is based upon the quality of impact of service the volunteer(s) provides the community. This award was presented to The Wagon Train Warriors - a dedicated group of approximately 18 volunteers that, several time a week, feed, cloth and create community with the homeless. Each volunteer brings something special to the group, everything from cooking meals, storing donations, handling the finances or sorting and labeling clothing. Each role is equally important. They are amazing and we appreciate their kindness and dedication to those less fortunate in our communtiy.

Our Club President, Ron Goodwin received the Sertoman of the Year award. Ron is currently serving a second term as President and has been a Sertoman for 49 years. His contributions to our club are endless and we congratulate him on this well deserved award!

Our essay winners, Sabriah and Victoria from the Binghamton Boys & Girls Club wowed us with there essays written in response to the question "What kind of qualities do you want to see in our next elected President". They read their essays to a full room and did great. Both were so well deserving. Each received a gift card for their hard work.

We were then notified by our Regional Director, Rich Garipoli, that both of our award winners won the Regional Service to Mankind Award and Sertoman of the Year. What wonderful recognition for both of them! And we are excited to announce that 8 members of the Wagon Train Warriors will be traveling to Cleveland in April to attend our Regional Convention and receive their award.
