The BCAC is an independent, 501(c)3 public service organization that provides community-informed arts programs and services through active planning, advising and education. We serve as a clearinghouse for arts information, and provide stewardship of existing art treasuries through financial support and collaboration. Our historical research and tours of public art inspires the community to both preserve and create the art culture of Broome County. And the good news? This is just the beginning.

For ceramic artist Matthew Wilson, the magic is in the assemblage, taking familiar forms, pairing thrown pieces, and combining different techniques into something a viewer hasn’t quite seen before. A high school art teacher and lifelong lover of process, Matthew built his solo show around grouping his many styles, colors, and methods into one cohesive body of work. Broome Arts Mirror: KNOW ends season with American classic

By Mary Pat Hyland

KNOW Theatre closes its 2025-2026 season June 12-28 with Tennessee William’s classic The Glass Menagerie. The play was William’s first stage success and was a reworking of his short story, “Portrait of a Girl in Glass.” Using the format of a memory play, Williams tells a tale — many considered autobiographical — of a man returning home to try to resolve “the guilt he feels for the choices he made concerning his sister, Laura, and his mother, Amanda, that still haunt him. The play explores themes of illusion versus reality, escapism, and the destructive nature of familial expectations, as the characters struggle to reconcile their past with the present,” according to KNOW.

IF YOU GO: KNOW Theater presents The Glass Menagerie June 12-28 at its theater, 74 Carroll St, Binghamton. Performances are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets at $28 ($23 for seniors, $15 for students) can be purchased online at https://knowtheatre.thundertix.com/events/251864.

The 8 p.m. June 18 performance is “pay what you can,” but any donation is welcome. For more information, call 607-759-5685.

Join us on Friday, June 5 from 6-9PM for the opening reception of "Art of a Bipolar Mind" by outsider artist Patricia Hauptfleisch, on view at BCAC's Art Path Gallery through June 27.

Art is a therapeutic outlet for Patricia as a person with a mental health diagnosis.

Patricia Hauptfleisch was born and raised in Endicott, New York. I am 64 years old now and an empty nester. While I was growing up as a young girl, I was always interested in painting and drawing. I was influenced by my mother, who liked to draw and paint with water colors. When I was in high school I took every art class that was available to me. I was also a member of the art club. Upon becoming an adult I got married and had two sons. My artistic pursuits were put on pause for awhile. In my twenties I was diagnosed with Bipolar. I began expressing myself through art again to cope with the ups and downs of my diagnosis. It was a therapeutic outlet for me. I consider it at times to be a savior in dealing with bipolar symptoms. Art has added so much to my life and I am thankful for it.

Artist Statement:
I am a 64 year old woman. Life is a journey. Art has been a therapeutic outlet for my expression as a person with a mental health diagnosis. My children inspire me to be more than a diagnosis.

My style is outside art.

This is how it is defined: Outside art is art made by self taught individuals who are untrained and untutored in the traditional arts. It is believed that this art style is created outside the boundaries of official cultures. Jean Dubuffet, who coined the term outsider art, believed it to be focused particularly on art by those on the outside of the established art scene, such as psychiatric patients, prisoners, hermits and spiritualists.

Emotion is the technique. That’s the heart of Natalie Dadamio’s practice, a mixed media abstract artist who builds her work from feeling first and trusts the mark in the moment to stand on its own. During her BCAC residency, she turned that philosophy into a project called Draw It Out, complete with a community drawing wall where anyone could leave their mark. Watch her full spotlight from her month-long residency at BCAC through the Artist in Residence Program in November 2024. Watch the full interview at: broomearts.org/artist-spotlight/
