Thank you to Farm Credit East, ACA !

Their grant from the Farm Credit Northeast AgEnhancement program, on behalf of the Farm Credit institutions, serve agriculture and rural businesses in the Northeast.

Their support is helping us sustain our Grow Binghamton program, which provides meaningful employment for youth (ages 14-21) in the City of Binghamton. Grow Binghamton provides youth with the opportunity to build critical life and job skills while creating greater food security for Binghamton residents.

Beginning with our six-week summer youth employment program, Grow Binghamton employees participate in every aspect of food production, from seed starting to distributing produce to Binghamton residents in need of access to fresh, affordable food and building community gardens.

From the National Museum of African American History & Culture:

Juneteenth is a significant date in American history and the African American experience. The name is a play on the date of June 19th, 1865. On that day, the Union Army made its way into Galveston, TX under the leadership of General Gordon Granger, and he announced to the people of Texas that all enslaved African Americans were free.

Even though we know that the Emancipation Proclamation freed African Americans in rebelling states (Texas being one of them, from as early as it when the Proclamation went into effect on January 1st, 1863) and we know that the Civil War had ended in April of 1865, it took a while for freedom to make its way to the western most rebelling state. Although there were enslavers who were aware of the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation, it wasn’t until June 19th, 1865 that it was actually enforced with the Union Army. June 19th freed enslaved people in the rebelling states, it did not free enslaved people throughout the nation.

🌱 How important is that spacing recommendation on the back of your seed packets? And what should you be aware of now that some of your seeds are turning into seedings?

If you’re planting things like lettuce or carrots and other root vegetables, you might want to think about thinning them to ensure healthy spacing.

Say hello to !

Wander Creek Farm joins us for the second year in a row as a partnering farm in our Farm Share program. This means that they help fill all of the orders that VINES receives with the gorgeous produce they grow at their farm in Greene, NY.

Mary and Jonathan, partners and stewards of Wander Creek Farm, grow on land that is part of Mary’s father’s farm, a piece they all call “The Flat.” As bottomland adjacent to Genegantslet Creek, it’s naturally bound by an ever-changing, wandering creek that flows around the farm.

Jonathan and Mary crossed paths as crew mates aboard a sailing ship in Puerto Rico. Once pointed in the same direction, and after several years living in California, their shared love for nature, working outdoors, dark leafy greens, and people, led to a clear destination: grow food for people.

Mary is the fourth generation in her family to farm in Greene, preceded first by her great-grandfather Louis in the early 1920’s. Mary’s grandmother Lucille grew up close by, loved the farm, and helped out well into her later years. Mary’s father took on the farm in 1980, ran a dairy business for about 20 years, and now raises cattle.

Wander Creek respectfully acknowledges that the history described here is an incomplete one. The land they farm now is in the region of the ancestral lands of the Haudenosaunee, the indigenous people who farmed in the area well before we did and whose ancestors lived in these lands for thousands of years.

Wander Creek operates a CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture, as a simple way for you to access fresh, local produce from farmers you know and trust using a subscription-like model. They partner with us to extend the community they are able to reach with their produce.

Thank you for all you do, Wander Creek!
