The SOGIES are so excited for October! We have so many events coming up this month, such as Karaoke night highlighting Q***r BIPOC artists 🎤, and tabling at PULSE’s Breast Cancer Festival! 💕

We had a great time last weekend taking a group of students from the Lavender Living Community, UNIV101Q, and MEAMS classes to the city to meet with renowned Broadway producing alum, Santino D'Angelo '13, visit the MET, and see the hilarious q***r Broadway play Oh, Mary! It was a great day filled with laughs, community building, and wonderful conversations!! We hope to continue this new tradition in future years!!

Special thanks to Santino DeAngelo, Newing Collegiate Professor John H. Starks, Jr., MEAMS Chair & Professor Tina Chronopoulos, Fleishman Career Center, Lavender Living Community GA Shannon Crowe, and Q Center Coordinator Erin Hansen for making this dream of a trip into a reality!!

🍁SEPTEMBER RECAP🍁!

The Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression educators at the Q-Center tabled at the Build Your Support System Event with Active Minds! 🧠 It was so nice to connect with students and support q***r individuals with mental health! ❤️‍🩹

Next, we tabled at the Education Abroad Fair, highlighting our LGBTQ+ study abroad network, as well as the Netherlands Study Abroad program! 💘

Then, we had our FIRST Fashion with Flavor Friday (Triple F), Destress for Success, where we talked about healthy de-stressing techniques for the beginning of the semester! We decorated journals and gave out free succulents! 🌱

We tabled for Chalk the Walk for World Su***de Prevention Day. We loved talking to students about the resources we have for q***r students who are struggling with mental health, + any additional resources we have! 🌸

Next, we had a study cafe and flower bouquet making collaboration with Women in Business! 💐It was a great time to study and create some beautiful flower arrangements!

We tabled at the Hinman Resources fair to give out some resources and indulge in some delicious red velvet cupcakes! 🧁

We had our second Triple F with the Office of Sustainability, called Gender Bend and Mend! 🌎We highlighted the pioneers of creating sustainable clothing for q***r individuals, and gave general body an opportunity to mend their own clothes! 🧣❤️‍🩹

Lastly, we had our Echoes of Identity, a space for q***r POC individuals, focusing on q***r Hispanic activists! We had some food from Los Tapatios 🌮, and discussed the importance of talking about Q***r activists during Hispanic Heritage Month! ❤️💚💛🧡🩵

🏳️‍⚧️🎉🏳️‍⚧️We're excited to kick off LGBTQ+ History Month by welcoming Stephanie Burt to campus tonight and tomorrow!! Please join the Creative Writing Program for the Distinguished Writers Series with Stephanie Burt TONIGHT, Thursday, Oct. 1, in the Old Champlain Atrium, 6-8pm.

A poet, editor, literary critic, and scholar, Stephanie Burt is one of the first openly trans faculty members of Harvard University, where she is the Donald P. and Katherine B. Loker Professor of English. Burt is the author of numerous published books, including her latest poetry collection, We Are Mermaids, and Taylor’s Version: The Poetic and Musical Genius of Taylor Swift. Burt's Harvard course on Swift and poetics recently sparked a viral discourse about the relationship between popular and literary culture.

TONIGHT at the Distinguished Writer Series, Burt will be reading her work, chatting with the audience, and signing books for sale. TOMORROW, Friday, Oct. 2, at the Q Center (LS-G549), 3-4:30pm, Burt will discuss her anthology Super Gay Poems: LGBTQIA+ Poetry after Stonewall. Burt will be reading, participating in an audience Q&A, and signing books. Both events are free and open to the university community and the public. We hope to see you there!!
