Its location, Court Street, was once known as “Mansion Row” but today it is the last remaining mansion. The Phelps Mansion Museum was built in 1870 for Sherman D. Phelps, a local Binghamton businessman, by architect, Isaac G. The "Gem" at 191 Court Street, now a historic house museum, is an exceptional example of the outstanding ability of Perry to coordinate into his designs beautiful rare woods,

metal, and glass in the interior of the house. The restored mansard roof and cresting as well as the iron fence highlight the exterior of the museum. Declared a national historic landmark in 1973, it was placed on the National Register of Historic American Buildings. In 2005 we received a provisional charter from the Board of Regents as a New York State museum. The Phelps Mansion Museum will utilize and preserve its unique Victorian facility and collections to serve the public through regular tours, exhibits and programs emphasizing local history, education, literature, art and music. The Phelps Mansion Museum reserves the right to delete any hateful, violent, homophobic, racist, derogatory, or otherwise abusive comments on our public platforms.

CASTLE ON THE Hill by Broome County Historian Roger Luther

A History and Virtual Tour of the Asylum at Binghamton
Built in 1858, its founder would pioneer medical addiction treatment in this country, it’s designer would become one of New York State’s leading 19th century architects, and for over a century it would provide security, health care and employment for thousands. Today this National Historic Landmark sits empty, abandoned and deteriorating.

This it the story of what began as the New York State Inebriate Asylum and later became Binghamton State Hospital. Presented by Broome County Historian Roger Luther, the presentation includes rare vintage photographs, original documents, personal accounts, recent developments, and a virtual walk-through of the building.

Violinsky - Binghamton's Eccentric Genius of the Violin"

Solomon (Solly) Louis Ginsberg was born in Kiev in 1886 and moved with his family to Binghamton at a young age. His father was Binghamton's first rabbi, and after he was murdered, Solly joined the Vaudeville Circuit as a pianist and violinist, becoming famous for playing the piano and violin at the same time. He branched out into songwriting and published around 50 songs, "When Frances Dances with Me" being the most famous.

Performances of some of his songs will be given. Solly died in Binghamton in 1963. He traveled the world but always had a soft spot for Binghamton.

We hosted a variety of events at the museum over the weekend. On Friday night, Mary Lou Muratori and friends delighted attendees with 'A Grand Night for Singing' during First Friday.

The following day, our team participated in the Vestal Festival and conducted a paranormal investigation alongside Empirical Paranormal.

On Sunday, students of Lynne Stanford performed in a piano recital.

We appreciate everyone who joined our events.
