If you have not yet been to the Thomas Cole National Historic Site where Jesse is the senior manager of events, marketing and visitor operations, we highly recommend a visit.

Jessica Goon ’19 uses everything she learned at Cortland daily at a Catskill, N.Y., artist’s historic site.

Maybe the real priceless artifacts were the friends we made along the way! Or... something like that. What we can say for sure is that the best tool in any archeologist’s belt isn’t a trowel, or a sifter, or fancy technology; It’s human connection. Whether that’s an archeologist finding common ground with a person who lived two centuries ago, or colleagues drenched in sweat fending off ticks from the bottom of a pit, or a ranger sharing an award-winning cookie recipe with a field school student, or us, sharing our passion with all of you, archeology is all about our ability to connect with our fellow human beings.

We had a great summer getting to connect with these students, and we hope they made some lasting connections that will follow them into their careers. See you all in the field!

For six weeks, we conducted an archaeological field school in partnership with the National Park Service. Students had the opportunity to excavate at the nationally important historical site of the Schuyler Estate in Schuylerville, NY. In addition, they learned about GIS, metal detecting, and public outreach from NPS staff.

We'll be sharing posts about the program from NPS in the coming weeks!
