Klickitat County Childcare Committee

Klickitat County Childcare Committee Working to address the childcare needs of our hard-working rural families in and around the Goldenda

A growing body of research shows that Americans recognize every child deserves a quality educational start in life. Programs that support positive childhood development are known to contribute long lasting benefits to our local communities, as well as the nation. In 2019 local agencies, parents and business owners created the Klickitat County Childcare Committee. They identified the childcare needs

of our local families through meetings, surveys and local employment data. KCCC was awarded a $100,000 planning grant from Washington State’s Commerce Department in late 2020 to help find solutions to the childcare crisis in and around the Goldendale, Washington region. Washington Gorge Action Programs serves as the groups fiscal sponsor.

Childcare subsidies could help Family, Friends, and Neighbors who provide care for youth in Washington!

Nearly 75 percent of children in Washington under age five are cared for by parents, family, friends, and neighbors who may be eligible to apply for subsidies. This type of child care is considered licensed-exempt by the State of Washington. Providers still need to navigate forms and receive some tr

$170M per year grant supports Washington pre-school program!

More low-income children will soon have access to pre-kindergarten in Washington.

Ballmer Group is putting up $170 million per year for the next 10 years for the state’s Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP), which provides free preschool to 3- and 4-year-olds.

Governor Bob Ferguson held a joint press conference with Ballmer Group and state officials on Wednesday morning to make the announcement.

Ferguson said this help comes during a very challenging economic time.

“Obviously, we’re experiencing significant budget challenges, and that’s an understatement,” Ferguson said at Wednesday’s press conference. “That’s what makes this announcement so wonderful and so transformative…in the face of that as a state, not simply be treading water in trying our best to maintain the limited slots we have, but to be in a position we can not just expand, but expand dramatically, the number of children and families who can benefit from what is truly one of the best programs we have as a state is something I’m deeply appreciative of.”

The money will pay for up to 10,000 children’s preschools each year, starting in 2026, pending legislative approval.

“We at Ballmer Group have been inspired by Washington state’s commitment to ensure that every eligible kiddo has access to high-quality early learning,” said Andi Smith, Executive Director of Ballmer Group in Washington. “Ballmer Group’s role is simple — to help that vision move faster.”

Governor Bob Ferguson holds a press conference in Seattle to discuss funding for Washington state's Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP).

White Salmon City Council is holding a public hearing tonight, Wednesday February 5, 2025, to amend the city code as it relates to commercial zoning, removing the requirement of a conditional use permit for early childcare facilities and schools with enrollment under 50.

Mayor Marla Keethler notes that the city has been working on this since summer 2024 when the council realized the additional requirement may be creating an undue burden for some child learning opportunities that were being considered in White Salmon.

You can submit written comments before 5pm to:
[email protected]
or attend in person or via zoom to submit comments during the hearing itself. The item is scheduled to be the second business item tonight, so the hearing is expected to be sometime between 6-7pm. Full meeting info is here:
