Black History Lives Here: Honoring John Henry Beck
Today, EBCC proudly honors John Henry Beck, a pillar of East Biloxi whose leadership helped shape both the civic and cultural life of our community.
During the critical voter registration efforts of the 1960s, Mr. Beck was instrumental in helping African American residents claim their right to vote—strengthening the voice and political power of East Biloxi families. He understood that true progress required both civic engagement and strong community spaces.
Mr. Beck was also a successful businessman, owning and operating restaurants, nightclubs, and other ventures that created opportunity, brought people together, and contributed to the local economy. His commitment to community extended beyond business—he worked to expand recreational opportunities for residents, and today, John Henry Beck proudly bears his name as a lasting tribute to that vision.
A dedicated member of the Elks and the Masonic Lodge, his impact was so profound that Henry Beck Lodge #307 PHA lodge is now named in his honor, reflecting the respect he earned through service, leadership, and integrity.
His legacy reminds us that building community takes courage, investment, and a belief in the people around you.
We honor John Henry Beck for helping lay the foundation for a stronger East Biloxi.
