June = Caribbean-American Heritage Month
In June 2005, the House of Representatives unanimously adopted H. Con. Res. 71, sponsored by Congresswoman Barbara Lee, recognizing the significance of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States. On February 14, 2006, the resolution similarly passed the Senate, culminating a two-year, bipartisan and bicameral effort. The Proclamation was issued by President George W. Bush on June 6, 2006.

In recognition of Caribbean-American Heritage Month, we reflect on America's Caribbeanโ€”the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 1992, Congress created Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve as part of the National Park Systemโ€”to preserve, protect, and tell the story of its rich contributions to the nationโ€™s natural and cultural heritage. The park "documents the human and natural Caribbean world from the earliest indigenous settlements in the central Caribbean to their clash with seven different colonial European powers to the present day." https://bit.ly/2MIVgPg

June 2, 1924 in The United States government conferred citizenship on Native American people by passing the Snyder Act, also known as the Indian Citizenship Act. Congress enacted the Indian Citizenship Act, which granted citizenship to all Native Americans born in the U.S. The right to vote, however, was governed by state law; until 1957, some states barred Native Americans from voting

Marking a historic milestone in 1924! The Indian Citizenship Act granted American citizenship to Indigenous peoples, affirming their voting rights in tribal, state, and local government elections. American Women Quartersโ„ข Program honoree, Zitkala-ล a, stood as one of the law's staunchest advocates. This year, the Mint also offers the 2024 Native American $1 Coin which celebrates the centennial of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924. https://bit.ly/3vUB9a5

June 3, 1992 in The Mabo decision a turning point for the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' rights, acknowledging their unique connection to the land was decided. Leading to the Australian Parliament passing the Native Title Act in 1993.

-- On this Day in 1992 --

Today, the last day of National Reconciliation Week 2019, we celebrate the anniversary of the historic Mabo decision. An event that forever changed Australian law and Indigenous Land Rights.

This event was commemorated by the Mint in 2017 with the release of this circulating coin, marking the 25th anniversary of the Mabo decision and the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum.

June 3, 1948 The Crazy Horse Memorial is dedicated with the first blast on the Mountain. Special guests include five of the nine survivors of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski promises Crazy Horse will be a nonprofit educational and cultural humanitarian project financed by the interested public and not with government tax money.
