Doris M joins Museum’s fleet

The Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum is excited to announce a very well known Chandeleur Lugger will join our fleet of historic vessels! The "Doris M" was generously donated to the Museum by Lee Seal and Leo Seal, III in honor of their late father, Leo Seal, Jr. - longtime Gulf Coast yachtsman and Chairman of Hancock Bank. Built in 1963 on the shores of Bayou Bernard in Handsboro by Joseph D. "Joe" Martinolich, the 47 ft. lugger was named for Martinolich's daughter - Doris. For over 40 years, the "Doris M" was operated by Hancock Bank, serving as a very unique customer entertainment venue.

The Museum's Boat Committee will oversee the complete restoration of this beautiful lugger and will soon have her back cruising our waters! From sunset Dinner cruises, to day trips to Horn Island, to overnight fishing charters... the Museum will preserve the great legacy of the "Doris M" in creating lasting memories on the Mississippi Sound. Just another great restoration project in preserving our Gulf Coast Maritime history!

The Doris M: A Legacy of Shipbuilding Excellence

Joe Martinolich was the son of Matteo Martinolich, an immigrant of Croatian descent who mastered the art of shipbuilding and design. Matteo established the Martinolich Shipbuilding Company on Bayou Bernard in Handsboro, MS - a historical Coast community named for native New Yorkers whose early South Mississippi ventures included forging grillwork to complement New Orleans' French and Spanish architecture.

At his Handsboro Shipyard, Matteo built the John Francis Stuard,the first vessel over 1,000 tons constructed on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He was the first designer to introduce Mississippi pine in building sea-going vessels. His son, Joe, began to hone his shipbuilding expertise at this father's side during the 1920s and 30s and eventually joined Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula to build vessels for the United States Maritime Commission during World War II. The young Martinolich remained at Ingalls after the war and advanced to a highly regarded supervisory capacity. When the U.S. Navy awarded Ingalls the shipyard's first submarine contract, Ingalls executives selected Joe to study the intricacies of submarine construction at the Electric Boat Company in Groton, CN. Joe was appointed to supervise the building of Ingalls' first submarine.

Joe also independently built Fish Class sloops for the Pass Christian and Bay-Waveland yacht clubs on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Coaxed back to boat building in the early 1960s after his retirement from Ingalls, he built the Doris M for Leo Seal, Jr. as well as two sister vessels: the Rebel for Pat Harrison, Jr. and the Sans Souci for Milton Buckingham. Although slightly different in size and design, the three crafts were locally referred to as "Martinolich Cruisers". "Mr. Joe", as he was known along the Coast, remained a consultant for Doris M maintenance until his death on August 10, 1983.
