A Title IX investigation is ongoing at Mesa Community College into theater professor Mace Archer, who is accused of inappropriate conduct. The faculty member has been on administrative leave for months, and this week, protesters called for his firing.

ACT Safe founder Kate Restad spoke with Q2 News about the reasons so many Venture Theater youth program alumni felt called to come together and create this organization dedicated to keeping young actors safe in the spotlight.

What began as troubling accusations against a theater director has become a catalyst for change in Billings, as a group of actors has launched a new nonprofit dedicated to protecting young performers.

This morning, students and community members gathered at Mesa Community College to protest the school’s decision to keep drama professor Mace Archer employed while he remains under investigation for numerous reports of professional misconduct.

Archer’s case is a painful reminder of why ACT Safe exists: to ensure that no young person pursuing their passion for theater is left vulnerable to grooming, harassment, or abuse. When protections fail, students are forced to bear the consequences—and that must change. No young performer should ever have to choose between their passion and their safety.

We’re grateful to our community partner Carissa Sundeen for joining today’s protest. Her presence is a reminder that ACT Safe doesn’t just talk about change—we show up, and we stand with students who deserve better.
