“If you have a little free time, I can’t recommend volunteering with Road To Recovery enough.

One of my most unforgettable passengers was a man who had lost his sight and was now battling cancer. His sense of humor was unmatched. We’d both laugh when he’d chime in from the back seat to tell me I’d missed a turn! His awareness of the world around him was incredible. He always knew exactly where we were." – Karen B.

🎗️ Cancer’s impact spans generations, and so does the determination to fight back. After watching her grandma’s melanoma spread from a small spot on her shoulder to her brain, Hannah P. turned her grief into action.

“She slowly lost the traits that made her herself, and that’s something I’ll never forget.”

Hannah joined ACS on Campus to champion her grandma’s legacy and now serves as Fundraising Co-Chair, connecting with local businesses to raise funds for our Hope Lodge communities and those undergoing treatment far from home. 💙

Her story proves the next generation isn’t just passionate; they’re powerful.

☀️ What Jeff thought was just a minor wound on his foot turned out to be something way more serious: stage 3 melanoma. By the time he got a diagnosis nearly a year later, the cancer had spread to his lungs, lymph nodes, and now potentially his liver.

Today, Jeff and his family are enduring intense treatments and facing out-of-pocket costs of over $15,000 each month, all while living far from home to receive care.

Skin cancer impacts more than 5 million people in the U.S. each year. Many cases are treatable when caught early, but time matters.

Jeff’s experience is a powerful reminder:
🧴 Apply sunscreen daily
🧢 Seek shade and wear protective clothing
🔎 Pay attention to changes in your skin and don’t delay seeing a doctor

“On New Year’s Eve 2022, my wife of 53 years was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer. I lost her six months later, and even today, the pain is still with me. Nothing will bring back the love, comradeship, and miracle of my wonderful wife, but it became obvious to me that I must ‘get outside of myself’ more by giving my best to others, particularly those who can’t give anything in return.

That’s why I am now a Road To Recovery driver. I am so deeply rewarded by the care that goes into driving patients to their critical treatments. Every trip is a blessing.” – Wes M.

🚙 “I enjoy driving for Road To Recovery because I meet great people who are always grateful.

My favorite patient was an 85-year-old woman living in assisted living, using a walker, who only had a granddaughter left for family. She was the happiest person you ever met.” – Ernest Terry G.

Take it from Ernest; the immense gratitude cancer patients feel for Road To Recovery volunteers cannot be overstated! 💑

What does it take to be an oncology nurse? Compassion, courage, and a whole lot of heart. 💙🩺

Stephanie M., RN, reflects on what inspires her to show up for patients every single day:

💬 “Having experienced an immediate family member's cancer diagnosis myself, I truly understand the emotional toll it takes. This empathy allows me to provide not just medical care and education but also heartfelt support and understanding. Being there for my patients and their loved ones during such challenging times is incredibly fulfilling. It gives me a sense of purpose that is unmatched.”

Stephanie, thank you for being a light in the lives of so many! 🌟
