Thanks to decades of generosity and hard work from so many volunteers, donors, staff, board members and other supporters, we are marking our 42nd anniversary this month!
The Billings Food Bank was created in April 1982. In early 1982, Nancy and Gordon Englert sent a letter to 80 Billings church leaders asking if their congregations would help feed the hungry by donating nonperishable food items on the first Sunday of each month.
Four churches initially responded and collections took place on April 4, 1982, the first Food Bank Sunday. More than 1,600 items and some cash were donated from First United Presbyterian Church and three Catholic parishes -- St. Thomas the Apostle, St. Pius X and St. Bernard.
Participation increased as the community embraced our mission to feed the hungry, and for that we’re so grateful.
In this 1987 photo, then board members Jim Canan and Bob Lamphere are shown placing the Billings Food Bank sign in front of our newest office/warehouse facility at 2305 Montana Ave. We were 5 years old and growing! More changes in locations over the next 37 years brought us to our current facility at 2212 4th Ave. N.
