Experiences don’t simply live in our memories. They can become embedded in our nervous systems, relationships, behaviors, and physical health. Author and psychiatrist Dr. Bessel van der Kolk summarized this reality in the title of his bestselling book, The Body Keeps the Score.

What this means, is that long after the original danger has passed, the body may continue responding as if the threat remains. Understanding this reality helps explain much of what we see, and seek to heal, on Billings’ South Side.

It's more than a typical summer job...

The trailer is loaded before most of Billings has finished its first cup of coffee. Mowers are secured. Trimmers are fueled. The day’s route is mapped out. But before anyone climbs into the truck or heads to the first property, the crew gathers. There is a safety talk. Expectations for the day are reviewed. A short devotional is shared. Only then does the work begin.

To someone passing by, it looks like a landscaping crew heading out to maintain lawns across the city. But what unfolds over the next eight hours is about far more than mowing grass. At CLDI, apprenticeship is built on a simple conviction: meaningful work can become meaningful mentorship.

We are looking for volunteers to help with our Friday Morning Breakfast at 316 during the school year.

We’ll be cooking and serving pancakes, eggs, and bacon. While the students eat, we’ll share a short devotional.

Sometimes, we believe in our tenants before they can believe in themselves.

A few weeks ago, a tenant came into the office and shared a story that reminded me of the power of simply seeing someone.

For the first time in a long time, she had opened her mail from us at Koinonia Property Management, CLDI’s property management company. Usually, she said, she just set it aside. Inside, she found a handwritten note from me, Miriam, congratulating her on her move-in anniversary. I had noticed the date and wanted to celebrate her and remind her that I saw how far she had come.

I remember when she first moved in. She had very little. She was working long hours at a different job and struggling to make ends meet. There were times she wasn't sure she would be able to pay the rent. But she kept going. She worked hard and persevered. Over time, she began to overcome the fear that had once weighed so heavily on her...the fear of not being able to make it.

As she stood in my office that day, tears filled her eyes. Life had been especially hard lately. One difficult thing after another had piled up, and she had been carrying a lot. But that little note reminded her of something she had almost forgotten:
She had done hard things before. And she had made it through.

She thanked me for believing in her. And I couldn't help but think about how often we underestimate the power of simply noticing someone. Sometimes people don't need us to fix everything. Sometimes they just need someone to recognize their progress to remind them how far they've come and celebrate the victories they may have forgotten to celebrate themselves.

A handwritten note may seem like a small thing. But to her, in that moment, it was a reminder that someone saw her, someone believed in her, and her story was worth celebrating.

That's the kind of community we want to build at KMC. One where people aren't just tenants or residents, but people whose stories matter.

Sometimes, a few words are exactly what someone needs to keep going.

What happens when we stop asking God to bless our plans and instead look for where He is already at work?

As summer winds down and a new school year approaches, we’ve been reflecting on what God has been doing through Youth Works on Billings’ South Side.

Because of your generosity, we’ve spent countless hours sharing meals, going on adventures, building trust, and investing in relationships that point young people toward Christ.

And through it all, one word has continued to come to mind: intentionality.

For more than two years, we’ve prayed for God to raise up a leader from within the South Side...someone who knows this community, loves these young people, and desires to disciple them toward a lifelong relationship with Jesus.

God, in His faithfulness, has answered that prayer.

We’re thrilled to share how Caven Herrera’s story has come full circle and how God is now using his story to impact the next generation.

On a 95-degree day, 13 staff members and volunteers from Performance Engineering showed up..... and they stayed to work hard!!!

Together, they installed a fence around the entire Hannah House Ministries campus, creating another layer of safety and security for women in recovery and their children.

This wasn’t just a fence. It was a tangible expression of care, protection, and community.

To the team at Performance Engineering: thank you. Your generosity and willingness to serve are making a lasting difference in the lives of women and children in our community. The impact of what you’ve done cannot be overstated.
