Our fundraising Banquet was a success! THANKS to all of you who supported our cause and hopefully had a good time doing that! We raised over $50,000 for side channel projects on the Stillwater river! If matching federal funds are granted, that will be a huge step towards restoring habitat that will help young trout survive and repopulate the Stillwater. The fish thank you!

Have you noticed the fishing on the Stillwater (and Rock Creek) isn't quite what it used to be? 🎣

Turns out FWP research has pinpointed a major part of the problem: many side channels lack sufficient flow or suitable habitat to support juvenile trout. There are still decent numbers of adult fish in the river, but without young fish coming up behind them, the pipeline is drying up — and eventually so does the fishing.

The good news? There's a real solution — improving side channel habitat. Most of the critical ones are on private land, so it takes someone who can work with both FWP and landowners to make it happen. Magic City Fly Fishers / Trout Unlimited Chapter 582 is funding Montana TU project manager Katie Young to do exactly that on both the Stillwater and Rock Creek.

Our annual fundraising banquet is May 15th, and every ticket purchased goes directly toward making this work possible. It's a great evening and a direct investment in better fishing on rivers we all love.

Wow lots of good information about the state of the Bighorn fishery was presented at the MCFF meeting last night. Much of it was worrisome but some of it was encouraging. How to best manage the river and fish in drought conditions spurred a healthy discussion! Thanks to Anne Marie Emery of the Bighorn River Alliance and Demi Blythe and Shannon Blackburn of Region 5 FWP for their insights. We hope to have an update on drought conditions affecting our local waters at next month’s meeting on May 5th. Stay tuned!

It’s going to be a blast! And all for a good cause with all funds raised to be spent on projects locally! Don’t miss this party!
