Showing my "SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI ROOTS"! ❤ Just finished dinner!😋Simple & Easy! I've lived in NW Montana for almost 33 years and still practice "Southern" traditions* such as this New Year's Day meal for GOOD LUCK! Mine is now secured for 2024!🙏👍 🤩Tonight, as usual for me on New Year's Day I made creole seasoned turnip greens & blackeye peas both prepared with bacon & ham pieces, plus a slice of smoked ham steak, white rice, plus golden cornbread, and SWEET TEA! ❤ YUUUUMMMM!!😋
*GREENS - Any variety is acceptable, but the most common are collard, turnip, or mustard greens. The greens symbolize WEALTH, but some households stew the greens with tomatoes, symbolizing WEALTH & HEALTH.
*PEAS- Symbolizing COINS, representing luck and promising prosperity, peas are used to make a dish seasoned with pork, ham, or sausage. Typically, black-eyed peas are used but lentils or beans can be substituted.
*CORNBREAD- Representing GOLD, eating cornbread brings with it the hope of extra spending money in the new year.
PORK - Another symbol of prosperity, eating pork is a tradition many cultures worldwide believe. ❤ 👍👍
