🏃‍♀️ Building a healthier Big Spring, one mile at a time!

This past Friday, we welcomed Renee Martinez, founder of Big Spring Run Crew, who shared how she's been bringing our community together through movement over the past three months.

What started as a passion for running has grown into a welcoming community where ALL fitness levels are encouraged. Whether you walk, jog, or run, there's a place for you. Renee's mission goes beyond fitness. It's about building connections, encouraging healthier lifestyles, and creating opportunities for our community to come together.

Thank you, Renee, for sharing your vision with us and for taking the initiative to make a positive impact right here in Big Spring.

👟 Interested in joining? Check out the Big Spring Run Crew Facebook group. No membership required, just show up!

This past Friday at our weekly Rotary meeting we were glad to welcome Darrelle O’Keffe with QTS Data Centers!

Darrelle shared an update on the QTS data center project and gave us a closer look at the important role data centers play in our everyday lives and in the economy.

We also heard more about QTS’s commitment to making a positive impact right here in our community by creating local jobs, supporting area businesses and skilled trades, and contributing to continued economic growth throughout our region.

Thank you, Darrelle, for taking the time to speak with our club and answer questions. We appreciate the opportunity to learn more about QTS and what this project could mean for the Big Spring area!

Big Spring Rotary was honored to welcome an outstanding young leader, Keila Reyes, as our guest speaker this week!

Keila is currently ranked #1 in her class of 225 students and has distinguished herself as an exceptional musician, earning 1st Chair Trombone at the state level. 🎺🏆

Keila shared some of her accomplishments, her plans for the future, and even treated our club to a performance on the trombone!

It was a privilege to hear from such a talented, driven young person from our community. We are always proud to see the next generation setting ambitious goals and working hard to achieve them.

Keila is the daughter of Luis and Noemi Reyes, who joined us for the program. Congratulations to Keila and her family on all she has accomplished. We know there are many more great things ahead!

Thank you, Keila, for sharing your talents and your story with the Big Spring Rotary Club!

⚡️ We got a lesson in how the lights stay on! ⚡️

A big thank you to Peter Gonzales with Oncor for joining us today and giving our club a behind-the-scenes look at how electricity makes its way to our homes and businesses.

Peter explained that Oncor is the “poles and wires” company responsible for delivering electricity across its service area. Some of us were ⚡️shocked⚡️ to learn that Oncor doesn’t actually produce or sell electricity!

We appreciate Peter taking the time to share his knowledge and help us better understand the infrastructure that keeps our communities powered.💡

Last week, Scott Emerson and Keith Stelter, founder of The Stelter Initiative, were our program guests. Keith runs his 501c3 out of Ector County, where his team runs clean-up operations in West Texas. He commented over all the work done two weeks ago at Moss Lake. We appreciate him and his team for their part in collecting over 40 TONS of debris at our lake, to help ensure reopening before the end of the season! Thank you gentlemen for your hard work to make Big Spring a better place to live!

What is Rotary?

Many people have heard of Rotary, but don't always know what we do.

The Greater Big Spring Rotary Club is a group of local men and women who are passionate about serving our community. Throughout the year, we volunteer, support local organizations, invest in our youth, and work together on projects that make a real difference right here at home.

This Friday, our club had the privilege of partnering with the West Texas Food Bank to help distribute fresh food to families in our community. From unloading trucks to loading vehicles, every helping hand made an impact.

If you've ever wondered what Rotary is all about... this is it.

Service Above Self.

Interested in learning more or visiting one of our meetings? We'd love to have you join us!

Today’s Greater Big Spring Rotary Club meeting featured an eye-opening presentation from Heather McNew, Substance Abuse Disorders Program Manager with West Texas Centers.

Heather shared valuable information about substance use disorders, the resources available throughout our region, and the critical work West Texas Centers is doing to support individuals and families on the path to recovery.

One of the most impactful takeaways was learning just how powerful fentanyl has become. It is estimated to be 50-100 times stronger than morphine and significantly more potent than he**in, making education and awareness more important than ever.

A big thank you to Heather for taking the time to educate our club on such an important topic and for the work she and her team do every day to serve our communities across West Texas.

Yesterday, our Rotary Club had the opportunity to hear from Sara Crowley with West Texas Centers, who shared an informative presentation about the Jail Diversion Program and the important services West Texas Centers provides throughout our communities.

We appreciate Sara taking the time to educate our club on the resources available to individuals facing mental health challenges and the impact these programs have on helping people receive the support they need while reducing involvement with the criminal justice system.

Thank you, Sara, for an engaging and insightful presentation!

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards or “RYLA” happened this weekend. Our club was lucky enough to sponsor some of our local youth to attend. We take applications every year through local school districts.

RYLA refers to the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, an intensive leadership training program designed for young people. Sponsored by local Rotary clubs, it usually takes the form of a 3- to 10-day seminar, camp, or retreat where participants develop communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
