The Little Coyote Pond/West Fork Gallatin River Restoration Project has been underway since September 20, 2023. Here's the down and dirty project description to get you all up to speed:
Environmental Benefit:
1) to improve and restore a community recreational facility in a recreation corridor
2) to improve water quality in the West Fork of the Gallatin River
3) to enhance and protect the fisheries of the West Fork.
Details:
The project will dredge and take the Pond off stream, restore the stream channel, enhance fish passage, and improve the fisheries in the stream and Pond. It will be deepened and contoured to maintain optimal conditions for fish growth and over-winter survival. The project will bring lasting improvements to the water quality, fish, and local wildlife populations. We are working with Fish, Wildlife, & Parks to get resident (native) fish from the West Fork into the Pond, by creating a spawning channel in the Pond’s inlet structure, benefiting resident fish species in the West Fork and the Gallatin River.
Community benefits:
The recreational amenities in the project include public access trails around the Pond which will improve overall connectivity to the Big Sky Community Park and existing trail segments in the Meadow Village area, and provide optimal opportunities for public recreation and fishing. The Pond construction also features a fishing dock with a handicap-accessible boardwalk, a beach, and picnic tables. It is located in a central area of Meadow Village in close proximity to affordable workforce housing, commercial units, the BSCO Community Park, and public open space backing up to US Forest Service land. The Pond can be utilized for recreational opportunities such as swimming, fishing, walking, and kayaking. It will also be a free resource for everyone in the area to use!
While we are far along in the construction process, we are still fundraising for the amenities. So far we have raised $940,000, and are hoping to raise another $850,000 by the 2024 summer.
