Work is worship

“This job has been given to me to do. Therefore, it is a gift. Therefore, it is a privilege. Therefore, it is an offering I may make to God.

"Therefore, it is to be done gladly, if it is done for Him. Here, not somewhere else, I may learn God’s way. In this job, not in some other, God looks for faithfulness.”

― Elisabeth Elliot

A message on God's grace

We are so grateful for Pastor David Waller and his lovely wife Priscilla and their family for coming and sharing many poignant messages with us during Excel 2021.

They encouraged us through their family's testimony and example of serving Christ wholeheartedly, and exemplified so much joy in serving the Lord when they joined us for the program.

“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also." - 2 Tim. 2:2

Choosing excellence

Whether it’s structuring our day to include time for praying and memorizing Scripture, adding extra polish to a bathroom counter, or selecting superior synonyms for a sentence in an essay project, the environment of Excel helps us choose excellence everywhere.

We believe that all tasks, when done in the name and for the glory of Christ — no matter how small or mundane — are meaningful.

The Protestant Reformation taught us this in the doctrine of “Soli Deo Gloria.”

And so at Excel, we view every chore, every interaction, every assignment, and even our rest and recreation as worship — worship of the God Who created us, loves us, and invites us to give ourselves — and our work — back to Him.

So even scrubbing a bathroom sink — that is worship.

And that is worthy of our most excellent efforts.

Hospitality Day with Mrs. Horsman

By welcoming us into her kitchen, her living room, and to her garden, Mrs. Horsman teaches hosting with an endearing amount of poise and practicality.

In a lovely day of learning, she walks the group of Excel ladies through hosting from start to finish, filling the hours with meaningful mini-lectures, hands-on activities, and loads of fun between all the lessons.

The day culminates with sharing a dinner, for which prep began that morning, and at which the girls can apply all the hostessing and manners they’ve learned through the day.

We’re so grateful for Mrs. Horsman and how she welcomes us into her home to teach, encourage, train, and love younger women, in the model of Titus 2.

“That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed… In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works.” — Titus 2:4-7

A quote for the New Year

“My child, the troubles and temptations of your life are beginning, and may be many; but you can overcome and outlive them all if you learn to feel the strength and tenderness of your Heavenly Father as you do that of your earthly one.

"The more you love and trust Him, the nearer you will feel to Him, and the less you will depend on human power and wisdom. His love and care never tire or change, can never be taken from you, but may become the source of lifelong peace, happiness, and strength.

"Believe this heartily, and go to God with all your little cares, and hopes, and sins, and sorrows, as freely and confidingly as you come to your mother.”

― Louisa May Alcott

A favorite Christmas carol from the Excel staff

“See, amid the winter's snow,
born for us on earth below,
see the tender Lamb appears,
promised from eternal years.

Refrain:

“Hail! Thou ever-blessed morn!
Hail, redemption's happy dawn!
Sing through all Jerusalem,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."

“Lo, within a manger lies
He who built the starry skies;
He, who throned in height sublime,
sits amid the cherubim! [Refrain]

“Sacred Infant, all divine,
what a tender love was Thine;
thus to come from highest bliss
down to such a world as this! [Refrain]

“Teach, O teach us, Holy Child,
by Thy face so meek and mild,
teach us to resemble Thee
in Thy sweet humility! [Refrain]

Edward Caswall, 1858

"Christmas is based on an exchange of gifts, the gift of God to man – His unspeakable gift of His Son, and the gift of man to God – when we present our bodies a living sacrifice."

“Feast, Christians, feast; you have a right to feast… But in your feasting, think of the Man in Bethlehem.

"Let Him have a place in your hearts, give Him the glory, think of the virgin who conceived Him, but think most of all, of the Man born, the Child given. I finish by again saying, A happy Christmas to you all!”

C.H. Spurgeon

“All we could ever imagine, could ever hope for, He is…

“He is the Prince of Peace whose first coming has already transformed society but whose second coming will forever establish justice and righteousness.

"All this, and infinitely more, alive in an impoverished baby in a barn. That is what Christmas means – to find in a place where you would least expect to find anything you want, everything you could ever want.”

- Michael Card
