PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

⚠️ LANDSLIDE HAZARD – MUSKEGON RIVER ⚠️

Residents and river users are advised to use extreme caution on the Muskegon River between Mile Marker 3 and Mile Marker 4 due to ongoing landslides along the riverbank.
These slides are currently impacting nearby homes and shoreline property. Unstable ground, falling debris, and sudden bank collapse may create dangerous conditions for boaters, anglers, kayakers, swimmers, and anyone traveling through this section of the river.

Please avoid traveling close to the shoreline in this area and remain alert for:
• Falling trees or debris
• Sudden bank collapse
• Mud and sediment entering the water
• Strong or unpredictable currents near slide areas

Property owners in the area are monitoring conditions closely and are reporting significant movements to local authorities. The Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Services will continue to monitor the area with safety officials.

Additional updates will be provided as conditions change.

Please share this notice with others who use the Muskegon River.

MRWA would like to give a HUGE shout out to Mike Wilson and the team from Everything Lower Muskegon River (Croton to Muskegon) for not sitting on the sidelines complaining about the recent high water and all the trash, but for JUMPING IN and getting it done! In one LONG Saturday afternoon, the team cleaned out numerous floating debris piles in Bridgeton Township - including FOUR REFRIGERATORS!!!

Special thanks to Bin There Dump That for making the dumpster rental so easy! UPDATE: And a huge thank you for DTE Energy for supporting disposal costs!!

The in-kind value of the voluntary effort? More than $3,700. The value to the community and the Watershed? PRICELESS!

What is a molting stonefly's favorite song?
If you lift up a stone in a stream, you'll see a lot of things, but one of the larger bugs will likely be a stonefly nymph. Stoneflies live as aquatic nymphs for up to three years. In that time, they shed their exoskeleton (molt), often climbing onto land or rocks to do so. You can find these remnants if you look carefully.

Stoneflies prefer a rocky stream bottom and well-oxygenated water. Their "hairy armpits" are actually gills. They are one of the more highly sensitive macros that we monitor.

What's the difference between a marchfly and a mayfly?

Mayflies are one of the more sensitive groups of aquatic insects, making them a crucial block in the Jenga tower that is a healthy stream ecosystem. In their winged form, they only live for a day or two. On the other hand, they can spend up to two years as nymphs underwater, content grazing on algae and other plant material. Their emergences can be so large that they are visible on radar.

Mayflies are one of the more sensitive groups of aquatic insects making them a crucial block in the Jenga tower that is a healthy stream ecosystem.
