Joshua Bealls Company of the Maryland Forces

Joshua Bealls Company of the Maryland Forces The Maryland Forces garrisoned both Fort Cumberland and Fort Frederick during the French and Indian War, 1754-1759.

Captain John Dagworthy’s Company was the first Maryland Company established after Lieutenant Colonel George Washington’s Defeat at Fort Necessity on July 03, 1754. In the aftermath of General Edward Braddock’s defeat on July 09, 1755 Governor Horatio Sharpe began preparing the colony of Maryland to counter the growing French and Indian threat on the western frontier. In 1756 he raised the addition

al four companies of the Maryland Forces once the Lower and Upper House passed the funding. These companies included Captain Joshua Beall’s Company, Captain Alexander Beall’s Company, Captain Francis Ware’s Company, and Captain Richard Pearis’ Company. The Maryland troops were present with Captain Dagworthy at
Braddock's defeat; they suffered severely at Major Grant's defeat
near Fort DuQuesne, September 14th, 1758; they lost a number
of men during the attack on the advanced post at the Loyalhanna,
October 12th, 1758; and they were present at the occupation
of Fort DuQuesne, November 25th, 1758. Re-established in 1975, the reactivated Maryland Forces is a group of volunteer military reenactors and living historians portraying this early provincial unit. The Maryland Forces have a tradition of service and dedication to providing living history programs at various historic sites throughout the region.
