The Florida Keys Wildlife Society -- formerly Friends And Volunteers Of Refuges - Florida Keys (FAVOR) -- is the official friends group for the four Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges. The Florida Keys Wildlife Society (FKWS) is a nonprofit membership organization whose mission is to support the National Wildlife Refuges of the Florida Keys through education, non-adversarial advocacy, voluntee

A night of intrigue and adventure- If you haven't been to one of these programs, you are missing out! Our Thur. Mar. 12 Nature Center presenter is David Fine, citizen scientist, who has spent many evenings in the Florida Keys documenting moths, our evening pollinators. David says there are about six moth species for every one butterfly species in any given environment, making moths one of the most diverse families of animals. In his project of attempting to catalog the moth diversity of the Florida Keys, he has over 200 species of moths identified and there are plenty more where that came from as there are a good number of “UFO’s” (specimens we have not yet been able to identify) and just about every time they put lights out, a new species gets added to the list. David and his family have been conducting surveys of moths of the Florida Keys since 2004 and has over a hundred nights spent in the hammocks and pines of the Keys to learn more about the moth diversity here. Though they are numerous, very little is known about the moths of the Florida Keys due to their nocturnal lives. On Thursday evening, after his talk, he will have some light sheets set up outdoors to attract moths and other night insects. It’s always a fun and educational experience, loved by kids and adults, some come on out with your family and friends to hear stories and see these amazing creatures.

Doors open at 6:30 pm with limited seating for the 7 pm evening talk inside the Nature Center. The outside portion of the event is also free and open to the general public, stop by at 8:15pm for the outdoor adventure even if you aren't able to be at the talk. Your Florida Keys NWRs Nature Center is located at 30587 Overseas Hwy on Big Pine Key.

"Key Deer Awareness Day" is observed annually on March 11th to raise awareness about the endangered Key deer and encourage efforts to help protect them. It was on this date in 1967 that the Key deer were officially added to the federal endangered species list. Fawn season is upon us now, and most of the adult females are ready to give birth. Please drive with care from Big Pine Key to MM17 on Sugarloaf Key. When driving throughout Big Pine Key, please do not stop in the road to interact with Key deer. This encourages them to come to cars and can unfortunately result in the death of the deer. Also, please remember do not feed the Key deer.
