Fun at the Bedford Public Library System! 📚📖

Only 2 days left until the official start of our 2026 Summer Reading Program "Unearth a Story™"!

Starting Saturday, May 23rd, you will be able to register for the program through our Beanstack website https://bplsonline.beanstack.com/reader365, OR through the FREE Beanstack APP on your mobile device, OR you can see a staff member at any of our 6 locations to get signed up.

The Summer Reading Program (or SRP) is open to readers of all ages, including adults. Every child and teen (Birth to 17) who registers will receive a FREE Book to keep, and adults will receive a DINOmite bookmark!

This year, we have set a goal of 40 days of reading (for a minimum of 20 minutes per day) between May 23rd and July 18th to complete the challenge. Kids and teens who read for 40 days will receive a cool backpack with goodies inside!

For the adults, we will be having a raffle at the end of the summer. Every adult who signs up and reads for at least 20 days will get 1 raffle ticket. If you read for 40 days and complete the challenge, you will receive an additional raffle ticket and a small selection of Geodes, Crystals, Rocks, and/or Minerals. Anyone who reads for all 57 days will receive 3 BONUS raffle tickets. At the end of the Summer, we will have 3 Grand Prize Winners (Amazon Gift Card, Walmart Gift Card, and an Unearth a Story™-themed Gift Basket), and we will also select a winner from each location for a smaller Branch Prize (Gift Card). Days of reading should be recorded in Beanstack, but paper trackers will be available.

Some fossil fun in July! 🦖

Our 5th and final main event series, The Fossil Files, will be presented by the Science Museum of Western Virginia (https://smwv.org/) at all BPLS locations in July.

What are fossils? Where do they come from? And, what can we learn from them? You’ll find out the answers to these questions and more at this special Unearth a StoryTM Summer Reading Program event!

Audiences will have the chance to observe fossil specimens and hypothesize about facts about ancient life based on their findings. Attendees will also have the chance to study and handle real fossilized materials!

A little something to help families get through the summer

Bedford County Public Schools is offering Direct-to-Home Meal Boxes for eligible children from May 24, 2026, through August 15, 2026, with breakfast and lunch delivered right to your door. Eligible families must register by 3 p.m. on April 24 to be included in the first delivery group.

Eligible students include those attending participating CEP schools or qualify for free/reduced meals. Even if your child attends summer school or a YMCA program, they may still qualify for meal kits on non-program days.
