Saco Salmon Restoration Alliance and Hatchery

Saco Salmon Restoration Alliance and Hatchery S**o Salmon Restoration Alliance & Hatchery is dedicated to anadromous fish restoration in the S**o River.

SSRAH is a 501(c)(3) and we are a 100% volunteer-based organization with an all volunteer Board of Directors. The S**o Salmon Restoration Allliance & Hatchery aka S**o River Salmon Club is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation. We have a state-of-the-art hatchery overlooking the S**o River estuary at the state boat ramp on Marblehead Lane in Biddeford. Our organization began in 1983 with a small egg

incubation and fry stocking program and has grown into a facility that can incubate up to a million eggs and fry per year at maximum capacity. In addition to raising salmon in the hatchery, we have recently employed egg planting techniques in order to allow salmon to hatch and grow in their natural habitat without human intervention. We are proud to be apart of the Biddeford and S**o communities and seek to improve the S**o for both wildlife and human use through trash drives and education; one such educational program is the Fish Friends Program, which allows schools to raise their very own salmon and learn about their lives. We are extremely active in negotiations for local private damn renovation and removal as well as habitat improvements. Join us for out Business Social meeting every third Thursday of the month! We always have informative guest speakers who seek to share their research and passion with those willing to listen!

Have you seen the nature-like fish way in S**o yet? Located at Spring Dam in S**o, Maine, this project was completed towards the end of 2019 (pre-COVID). By order of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Brookfield Renewable, owner of Spring Dam, deconstructed part of the existing dam and reconstructed an area with a slight incline and more natural substrate to allow fish such as American shad, herring and salmon, to pass more freely and with fewer obstacles.

Check out these swift swimmers! Though far from being ready to be released into the wild or to other facilities (like the ), these are baby salmon (fry) at about 7 months old. Cute, right?

You've heard of and seen cows, goats and other animals being milked, but have you ever seen a salmon being "milked"? Milking is a non-lethal way of inducing broodstock to release their eggs. Make way for the future!
