Stories help us understand where we’ve been, who we are, and where we’re going. This Juneteenth, we’re reminded that every story matters.

Like the story of Jan Ernst Matzeliger, whose invention transformed the footwear industry and left a lasting mark on the history of our region. Recently, Beverly honored his legacy with the dedication of Jan Ernst Matzeliger Way, the first street in the city named after a person of color.

His story reminds us that history is built by innovators, workers, dreamers, and community members whose contributions deserve to be remembered and shared.
As Beverly celebrates 400 years, we’re committed to collecting and preserving stories that help tell a fuller picture of our community’s past and future.

Summer reading starts with a book 📚 but sometimes it leads to a lifetime of discovery.

Of the Beverly Public Library, Susan Maguire recalls, “It opened up new worlds of ideas, with its books, art work, and atlases of faraway places, including the Middle East, where I ended up one day…So, from the seniors to the toddlers and everyone in between, thank you Beverly Library for being a haven for so many, and for giving us a place to learn, create, and share, in your beautiful hallowed halls”
