We, in the Pediatric Trauma Society are deeply saddened by the act of violence at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. As a society of pediatric health care experts, we will continue to focus our efforts not only on clinical trauma care, but on advocating for children and families against threats to their safety.

We are grateful for trauma centers like St. Charles Bend Hospital that stand, always ready, to care for the injured.

🔥 Could your family escape in the dark?

A fire can spread in minutes, and smoke can make it difficult to see or breathe. That’s why having a fire escape plan before you need it matters. 🏠🔥

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Make a plan together:
➡️ Identify 2 ways out of every room, when possible.
➡️ Pick a safe meeting spot outside—away from the home.
➡️ Make sure everyone knows how to call 911.
➡️ Practice your escape plan at least twice a year.
➡️ Teach kids: Get out, stay out! Never go back inside.

🚨 Bonus tip: Make sure smoke alarms are working and located on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas.

Don’t wait for a fire to figure out your escape route. Practice today!

For the local case study at the 2026 PTS Annual Meeting, we're honored to host a screening of "Death by Numbers" followed by a panel discussion with writer/survivor Sam Fuentes alongside some of the medical professionals who were present that day — Chief Juan Cardona (EMS first responder), Dr. Berne, and Dr. Guarneri from Broward Health Medical Center. This conversation will explore what happened that day through the lens of the trauma team, while centering Sam's voice as the reason we do this work.
