Did you know that black people lived in Randolph County as early as 1777? Or that black workers helped build Stuart Recreation Area? The Beverly Heritage Center will unveil a new exhibit about African-American history in Randolph County on Sunday, June 19th (Juneteenth) at 1:00. The opening ceremony will be followed by a walking tour of downtown Beverly.

This brand-new exhibit explores stories of freedom and emancipation, family histories, business and labor, and school and church life. The exhibit combines historical artifacts from the Heritage Center collections, oral history interviews with local residents, a timeline of important national and local events, and much more! Visitors will learn more about familiar local landmarks like the Riverside School as well as lesser known stories such as the relationship between the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike and the Underground Railroad. The walking tour of Beverly will meet at the Heritage Center following the opening ceremony at 1:00. Museum admission will be free this day only. The walking tour will last approximately one hour.

The exhibit will be open to the public Tuesdays through Sundays from 10am-5pm.

This project is presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations do not necessarily represent those of the West Virginia Humanities Council or the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Monthly dances will be returning to Helvetia beginning June 4th! 7-10pm in Star Band Hall. $5 per adult. Dances include waltzes, polkas, schottisches, and square dances. No experience or partner required.

The dances called in Helvetia are a truly unique tradition. Seen here is their main square dance figure.

Compared to other square dances, dances in Helvetia are unique as they do not use a designated caller and dances are called by dancers from the floor. These "square dances" are actually circle dances and include common figures such as the promenade, do-si-do, Grand Right and Left, and less common figures like the Butterfly Whirl.
