165 years later: “Philippi Races” Takes Place as One of the Civil War’s Opening Acts on June 3, 1861.
On June 3, 1861, one of the opening acts of the Civil War unfolded in the town of Philippi. At daybreak, the road of Union cannons shook some 800 slumbering Confederate soldiers from their tents. The routed Confederates made a hasty retreat, derisively remembered as the “Philippi Races.” The brief engagement was one of the first land battles of the Civil War involving organized troops. The battle also provided an interesting footnote as a wounded soldier, James Hanger, had his leg amputated and later crafted an artificial leg for himself - eventually founding Hanger Prosthetics.

When thinking of the American Revolution, it’s not often someone thinks about West Virginia. Perhaps the Battle of Point Pleasant, long claimed to be the war’s first battle, but not Tygart’s Valley, right?

In their new America 250 exhibit, the staff at the Beverly Heritage Center is working on changing that perception.

We can’t let Historic Preservation Month come to an end without highlighting one of our current restoration projects in Historic Beverly. We secured funding to started work on the Collett House’s Log Room! According to local sources, this may be the oldest still-standing structure in Beverly. Built as early as 1772, it predates Randolph County and the town itself. Thanks to Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area for helping us start this project - and continue the important work of historic preservation here!
