We’re excited to celebrate WJA LA Chair and jewelry designer Cheryl Freund who was selected to participate in the 2026 MJSA Responsible Jewelry Design Challenge!

For this year’s challenge, eight designers were given the same
responsibly sourced gemstones from Columbia Gem House and asked to create a piece inspired by the story of Mara Ellsworth, a naturalist and educator who is navigating change and finding a new sense of direction.

Cheryl’s design explores stability, grounding, and finding your way forward when life takes an unexpected turn, a meaningful reflection of Mara’s story.

Public voting is open throughout October 31! We encourage our WJA LA community to check out the eight designs and, if you connect with Cheryl’s piece, cast your vote.

Cheryl has also donated her piece to the Columbia Gem House fundraiser raffle, with 100% of proceeds benefiting Peoples Training & Research Centre and their work supporting individuals and their families affected by silicosis, an occupational disease and hazard faced by people who cut and polish gemstones and beads, often in less than ideal working conditions.
