"I returned to Kenya to tragic and shocking news that has left us all stunned . The human animal conflict in the areas of East Africa that still host world heritage wildlife continues . The recent death of 15 elephants within the Amboseli National Park who died after eating food crops sprayed with toxic chemicals such as cyanide is not only the painful loss of these protected animals but in attempting to protect crops what insanity chose people to use such deadly chemicals ? If it kills elephants did they not think it wouldn't kill people ? Cancer is rampant in most farming communities and somehow the connection is not being made . Sorry to be reporting such bad news but it is a story that must not go unnoticed." Stefanie

These photos capture the memorable moment of our WHWF staff during their recent Mount Kenya trek. The images were taken at Old Moses Camp and beside the weather station above the camp. For many of our staff members this was their first experience trekking to such a high altitude, reaching approximately 3,300 meters above see level. The adventure was both exciting and unforgettable to the team, offering breathtaking mountain scenery and a unique opportunity to experience the alpine environment. The staff sends their sincere appreciation to our president, board of directors and our administrator for making this memorable experience possible.

Meet James, affectionately known as ‘Major’. He is the dedicated caretaker of our six resident llamas. He ensures their boma is clean, they are well fed and groomed, and they enjoy regular walks in the forest. He also closely monitors their health and promptly reports any signs of illness or injury. His dedication and care helps keep our llamas healthy, happy and thriving.

We wanted to share an update on one of our model gardens at Wathituga Primary School. Following training provided by our staff on regenerative farming practices, the school caretaker, John Gachie, has successfully applied these techniques to establish and maintain a thriving garden. Teachers are grateful to the foundation as the garden has become a valuable teaching and learning resource. Parents and other community members are also welcome to visit the model gardens to learn these techniques and apply them in their own farms.

During regular visits to our rural schools, our Agro Ecology Team has the opportunity to demonstrate to students the step-by-step process of making compost. The hands-on sessions introduce them to the fundamentals of composting - the proper layering of organic materials, moisture management, and turning the compost to ensure effective decomposition. The box compost system takes approximately 2 - 3 months to produce mature. When ready, the compost is then applied in the school gardens to improve soil fertility and enhance crop productivity and promote sustainable farming practices. Through this practical learning experience, we aim to inspire all our students to embrace organic soil management and reduce reliance of synthetic fertilizers which are commonly used by many farmers. We are also fostering a culture of environmentally friendly and regenerative farming that they can share with their families and communities.

We are pleased to report that our vermicompost production at the education center continues to thrive. What began as a small initiative in a single bucket has now expanded to three thriving vermicompost boxes, reflecting the steady growth and success. This project serves as an excellent demonstration of sustainable waste management and regenerative agriculture while providing valuable hand-on learning opportunities for our students and visiting groups at the Foundation.

We just hosted our sponsored students for term 2 which commenced on April 27 up until July 31, 2026. The students are profoundly grateful for the unwavering support they have continued to receive from the Foundation and their Sponsors which has enabled their retention in school as well as pursue their education aspirations without constraints. As the new term begins, students are optimistic to resume their studies with renewed determinations to achieve outstanding performance.
