We switched things up for our Scouting for Food initiative this year and it turned out really well! We collected 1,427 pounds of food for our chartered organization's (Citrus Community Church) food pantry.
In years past, we would visit various neighborhoods in Beverly Hills over the course of two weekends. On the first weekend, we would distribute door hangers that provided the details of the initiative and identified when we would return and where to place the food for collection - if you wanted to participate. We would return and collect the food on the following weekend and then deliver it to the pantry where it would be recorded and weighed.
This year, we set up at Winn Dixie in Beverly Hills and had a few shifts over a couple of days. This gave people the opportunity to participate in a more timely fashion (instead of waiting for us to return a week later), was more efficient (& less wasteful) than distributing the door hangers to houses that didn't want to participate, reduced the follow up effort for collection, and also allowed us to directly support Winn Dixie - who has been very good to us over the years!
Our previous collection record (for the past 5-6 years that I have been tracking it) was 1,033 pounds - so this was very exciting!
Big thank you to Citrus Community Church for their support, and to Winn Dixie - Beverly Hills for their support, and finally to all of the local residents/visitors who have supported us in this event and on various other occasions over the years. Troop 452 would not be able to do all of the things that we do without that support! Thanks so much!
