Detroit Area Modern Quilt Guild Metro Detroit’s Modern Quilt Guild ✂️
A community of modern quilters learning, sharing, creating & celebrating the modern quilt movement. Please join us!

The Detroit Area Modern Quilt Guild, or DAMQG, is a small group of non-traditional quilters in the Metro Detroit area. Our work focuses on modern designs, which varies from traditional patterns made with funky fabrics to improvisational piecing without patterns. Our meetings are filled with fun and inspiration, featuring local speakers, demonstrations, challenges, swaps and everyone’s favorite: sh

ow and tell. We also have occasional weekend sew-ins, workshops and retreats for our members. The DAMQG was established in January 2013 and is a branch of the Modern Quilt Guild. New members are always welcome.

At our August meeting, members shared their finished projects from our Quilt Coat Class, taught by guild member .

From bold fabrics to thoughtful details, every coat is uniquely its maker’s—and we’re loving how they turned out!

Thank you to everyone who stitched, learned, shared, and made the class such a fun part of our guild community. 💛

After a July summer break, we were so happy to be back together for our August guild meeting! 🧵✨

We kicked things off with a virtual lecture on “Wearable Art” from Erin Grogan of Love Sew Modern (). Erin shared inspiration and ideas for bringing quilting beyond the quilt and into what we wear. 💛

And, of course, no guild meeting is complete without member Show & Tell! We loved seeing what our members have been making and celebrating the creativity in our community.

Thanks to everyone who joined us and helped make our first meeting back such a great one!

📅 Our next meeting is September 1st — we can’t wait to create, share, and connect again!

❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

June Guild Meeting Recap: Summer Social & Quilting Journeys ☀️🧵

Our June Summer Social was a wonderful evening of connection, inspiration, and storytelling. Guild members shared the unique journeys that brought them to quilting, reflecting on how their skills, creativity, and passion have grown over the years.

One of the highlights of the evening was seeing member's very first quilt alongside a recent or favorite quilt. It was inspiring to witness the incredible progress, artistic growth, and personal stories stitched into every project. From beginner blocks to beautiful, well-loved creations, each quilt represented a chapter in its maker's quilting journey.

Thank you to everyone who shared their stories and quilts. Your willingness to celebrate both where you started and where you are today reminded us that every quilt—and every quilter—has a story worth sharing.

As a reminder, the guild will not meet in July as we take our annual summer break. We hope you enjoy a relaxing month filled with quilting, creativity, and sunshine. We look forward to seeing everyone back at our August meeting to kick off another season of inspiration, learning, and friendship.

Happy quilting!
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

A quilt-along starting 5/18.

Join us on Facebook live on the Modern Quilt Studio page Monday May 18 7pm CDT for the first of our Summer Nights Mini Quiltalongs. We'll be making a 15" x 33" patriotic wall hanging/banner to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. This beginner friendly, scrap friendly project includes the option to make a piece with either vertical or horizontal orientation. We used fused appliqué for our version but the instructions also include templates for people who want to do hand or machine appliqué. We'll also discuss quilting options and how to include an easy sleeve for your banner as well. Perfect for a door banner or something fun to carry in your local July 4th parade. If you want to make the project later, no problem, you'll have access to the prerecorded video later. https://www.modernquiltstudio.com/product/we-the-people/
