The Mother of Humanity®: A Beacon of Hope Amidst the Flames
By Nijel Binns
As Los Angeles faces another trial by fire, we are reminded of the resilience and unity that this city has shown in times of hardship. The Santa Ana wind-driven wildfires of this January 2025 have devastated entire communities, with Pacific Palisades bearing the brunt of the destruction. In five areas within Los Angeles county, thousands of acres have been reduced to ash, and countless families now face the monumental task of rebuilding their lives. But amidst the chaos and loss, the Mother of Humanity® monument stands as a timeless symbol of hope, healing, and renewal.
Unveiled on May 11, 1996 in Watts, California, the Mother of Humanity® monument was born out of the ashes of another dark chapter in Los Angeles' history. In 1992, just a few years prior, the city had erupted in one of the most devastating riots the nation had ever seen. Fires raged, reducing inner city neighborhoods to rubble, and Los Angeles seemed fractured beyond repair. Yet, in the wake of that destruction, the Mother of Humanity® emerged as a vision for a better future. Conceived by me to embody the principles of peace, unity, and love, the Mother of Humanity® monument has since served as a guiding light for a city that has weathered many storms. At 16 feet tall, the bronze monument sits on a bedrock of granite in the heart of the city of Los Angeles. As the first of seven, it is located at the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC) 10950 S. Central Avenue in Watts.
The symbolism of the Mother of Humanity® resonates deeply today as it did nearly three decades ago. Representing the nurturing spirit of a universal mother, the monument was designed to inspire the values of compassion and community. Her kind and sanguine gaze reflects peace and compassion. She holds a feather of peace, truth and reciprocity high in her right hand. Her left hand is open in a gesture of welcome, calling together all nations on Earth. During this time of the coming age of Aquaria —the water bearer—it carries a message of renewal and transformation. The age of Aquaria looks forward to washing away the old, extinguishing the flames of blame, hatred and sadness, and replacing them with compassion, harmony and understanding. Today, as flames consume parts of our beloved city, the Mother of Humanity® calls upon us to find strength in our shared humanity and to rise above the ashes once more.
The 2025 wildfires are a stark reminder of our vulnerability in the face of nature, but they also present an opportunity to come together as a community. Just as the monument reminds us of the healing power of water, we must draw from its symbolic reservoir of hope to douse the fires of despair. The Mother of Humanity® challenges us to embrace the spirit of giving, to open our hearts to those who have lost everything, and to rebuild not just homes but also the bonds that make us stronger together.
Throughout its history, Los Angeles has been a city of resilience. From the 1992 riots to the Northridge earthquake, to the wildfires and challenges of today, its people have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to rebuild and recover. The Mother of Humanity® monument stands as a testament to this enduring spirit. It reminds us that while the flames may rage, they cannot consume the love, kindness, and unity that define us as a community.
As we look to the future, let the inspiration of the Mother of Humanity® guide our path. Let it inspire us to act with compassion, to support one another, and to create a city where all can thrive. In the face of adversity, we have the power to transform tragedy into triumph, just as we have done before. Together, we can rise from the ashes and rebuild a brighter, more united Los Angeles.
The Mother of Humanity® calls to us now more than ever: to heal, to rebuild, and to hope.
