Beverly Hills Historical Society

Beverly Hills Historical Society Founded in 1984, we collect, preserve, and present all forms of media and artifacts on the history of our hometown.

The Beverly Hills Historical Society, founded in 1984, is the oldest non-profit organization dedicated to preserving that which is pertinent to the history of the city of Beverly Hills, and as such, has been collecting, recording, and preserving that history for over 30 years. Its volunteer members have gathered materials which include photographs, documents, correspondence, newspaper clippings, s

crapbooks, audio and video recordings, books, trophies, and other historical memorabilia, dating back to the city's development in the early 1900s. Also in its collection are copies of documents and journals going as far back as the area's discovery by Spanish explorers and the days it was in the possession of the Valdez family, when it was known as El Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas. The Historical society catalogues these materials and provides limited public access to these resources. The Historical Society also receives daily inquiries from schools, film makers, writers, historians, and scholars regarding subjects within the city's history. Contact:

"We should all start to live before we get too old." ~ Marilyn Monroe
And, that she did.
We wish a Happy Heavenly Birthday to a frequent resident of our hometown, MARILYN MONROE. Norma Jeane Mortenson was born on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles. She's known for playing comedic "blonde bombshells" and became one of the most popular s*x symbols of the 1950's and 1960's as well as an emblem of the era's s*xual revolution. Her films grossed $200 million ($2 billion in today's standards) in her lifetime. Long after her death at 36 years old, Monroe remains a pop culture icon.

Marilyn founded her own film production company in 1954 and began studying "method acting" under Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio just down the road in Hollywood. Some of her most iconic roles were in Bus Stop, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Prince and the Showgirl and The Seven Year Itch. She won a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her role in Some Like it Hot in 1959. Her last completed film was in The Misfits in 1961.

Her marriage to retired baseball star Joe DiMaggio was highly publicized; they divorced only 9 months later. She died of an overdose of barbiturates at her Los Angeles home. Joe directed her funeral services and had roses placed on Marilyn's crypt twice a week for over twenty years. His last words before he died were, "I'll finally get to see Marilyn".

We all benefit from her films and get to see Marilyn any time. And, some of us were very lucky to see her walking and driving out and about in Beverly Hills when our city was a little village of movie stars, composers, and other entertainers gracing us with a little bit of magic.

Last night, the Beverly Hills Cultural Heritage Commission hosted the very first annual Historic Preservation Awards at Greystone Mansion. At the ceremony, our past president, Phil Savenick, posthumously received the Historic Awareness and Education Award for his work promoting and sharing the history of Beverly Hills. The award was accepted on Phil’s behalf by our Executive Director, Kevin Miller, and board member, Suzanne Hertfelder. If you would like to see the award renamed the Phillip Savenick Historical Awareness and Education Award — and if you believe the next recipient should be long-time Historical Society angel, Robbie Anderson, please drop us a note in the comments section. Thank you!

🇺🇸On this Memorial Day we honor all of our hometown heroes that joined the armed forces in WW2! Whether in the trenches and planes, entertaining our troops or helping out at home ~ they truly were “the greatest generation”.
Enjoy this video as ONLY our beloved and very missed president, Phil Savenick, could tell it. 🇺🇸

Remember Beverly Drive from our past? The street where we walked with our parents and hung with our friends. There was The Beverly Theater, Linny's Deli, Blum's, Newberry's, Pixie Town and so much more! You could buy ci**rs, Hawaiian shirts, goldfish, ties, burgers and shakes, little league uniforms, records, patent leather shoes, popcorn at the movies - anything and everything. This may be a fancy schmancy street that tourists use to people watch and window shop now. But, back then Beverly Drive was our "Main Street" where most everyone knew each other and smiled as you passed by. Doris Day would be seen riding her bike and ringing her bell to say hello. You might catch Jimmy Stewart and his wife, Gloria purchasing a watering can at Pioneer Hardware. Troy Donahue would smile as you past him at his booth at Nate n Al's. What are your memories of that magical little street?

Remembering our wonderful former BHUSD School Board member and preschool teacher Margaret Hamilton (December 9, 1902-May 16, 1985) ~ aka
‘The Wicked Witch of the West’.

When asked about her role in The Wizard of Oz, the former teacher often said her greatest fear was that her monstrous film role would give young people a false impression of her true nature. The reality is that Margaret Hamilton cared deeply about children. She was a lifelong advocate for educational causes, devoting much of her energy and money to benefit causes that improved the lives of children and animals. Ms. Hamilton served on the Beverly Hills Board of Education from 1948 to 1951, and founded and taught at the Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church School on Rodeo Drive in the 1950s.
When introduced to Ms. Hamilton she’d always say, “Call me Maggie”.
