Summer in the Quad Cities means you'll see people out running along the river, kids playing outside, and making warm memories. 🔅

Today is Global Running Day, and we're celebrating the community that helps every child get off to a good start. 🏃🎉

For some families, something as simple as a new pair of shoes can be a hurdle or a financial burden. Without well-fitting shoes, kids can miss out on the chance to run, play, and just be kids.

But thanks to the support of our community partners, more kids are stepping into summer on the right foot; ready to run towards joy, confidence, and everyday moments that matter.

From new shoes to cheering them on at field days, your support goes the distance. When kids are surrounded by support who show up, it’s like tying a brand new pair of shoes. It gives them the traction, foundation, and momentum to take off and chase their dreams. 👟🌟

Community impact like this is helping build stronger and healthier families, and giving kids what they need to succeed.

Today, we celebrate movement in all its forms, and the people who step up to make it happen, every step of the way.

Thank you to the partners who went the distance with us:

There is a flag flying over the Arsenal, as there is every morning; its meaning always present. But today, alongside the sound of cannon fire, we’re reminded to pause… and reflect a little more deeply.

In the Quad Cities, the Rock Island Arsenal is part of our everyday backdrop. Most of us have driven past the gates, watched the bridge turn, and seen (or known) the soldiers moving through our community. It’s simply part of life here.

On a day like today, we’re invited to slow down and look a little closer
to consider what that backdrop really is, and what it represents.

That island has been part of the United States story since 1862, connecting our community to those who serve. Today, it’s home to the First Army, training Army Reserve and National Guard soldiers from across the country. For many of them, the Quad Cities becomes a temporary home, right here on our stretch of the Mississippi.

The Arsenal allows their stories to come into focus. Some of those soldiers came home. Some didn’t. And here in the Quad Cities, we have a unique opportunity to remember them up close. To walk among the headstones of a national cemetery, hear the cannon fire, and reflect on lives given.

We don't always know their names. But we do know that they were someone’s family, someone’s friend…and part of the story that connects us all.
❤️🤍💙

A child’s future shouldn’t depend on luck or zip code.

That’s why last week’s Women United in Bloom event was about so much more than a beautiful evening together.

This year, United Way Quad Cities - Women United funded 24 Ready by 5 workshops reaching 240 local families across the Quad Cities.

Because if we’re honest, most parents are figuring it out as they go. We want our kids to be ready for school - and life - but nobody hands you a roadmap.

Ready by 5 helps change that by giving families practical tools, encouragement, confidence, and simple ways to turn everyday moments into learning moments.

As a result, children who participate are more likely to enter kindergarten ready to learn than peers who didn’t receive that support.

Thank you to every Women United member, partner, and volunteer who is part of this movement to build stronger beginnings for local children and families.
