⚜️ History of the Scout Handshake
The Scout Handshake is one of the most recognized traditions in Scouting worldwide. Unlike the usual handshake, Scouts greet each other using the left hand as a symbol of friendship, trust, and brotherhood.
🌍 Origin of the Scout Handshake
The tradition dates back to 1907, when Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, was serving in Africa.
According to Scout tradition, Baden-Powell met the chief of the Ashanti people in present-day Ghana. When Baden-Powell offered his right hand in greeting, the chief instead extended his left hand.
The chief explained that brave warriors carried their shields in their left hand. To shake hands with the left hand, a warrior had to put down his shield, demonstrating trust, courage, and friendship. Since the left hand is also closer to the heart, it represented sincerity and respect.
Baden-Powell was impressed by this gesture and adopted it as a special greeting for Scouts around the world.
