Our Jr Optimist Clubs at Bettendorf Middle School have had a busy year of service. They put up flags in front of their school on holidays, raise funds all year to donate to charities including Riverbend Food Bank, backpacks for students in need and the Humane Society. Their creative ways of fundraising included selling baked goods and bracelets, selling cotton candy at the Halloween dance and good luck ducks during testing days.

These are young people who are learning about the needs of their community and finding ways to make a difference. We are so proud of them!

Some of our members recently toured the Regional Innovation Center in Eldridge. The whole facility is set up for high school students from surrounding school districts to learn hands-on skills in a variety of subjects. These are some of the subjects taught: homebuilding, electricity, plumbing, diesel mechanics, robotics, veterinary care, agriculture (including research) science, culinary arts, nursing, aquaponics, gardening. They also make some products and run a store to help with costs of the programs. It's definitely a center for learning!

We enjoyed helping package 3,000 meals with Kids Against Hunger. Our Bettendorf Optimist Club was joined by our Jr Optimist Club members at Bettendorf Middle School to help with this process. We combined nutrients, bagged, weighed and sealed food that will go to foreign countries and also used in our local community to feed people who are hungry. Our thanks to all who helped!
