MYTH: PTSD only affects veterans.

TRUTH: PTSD can affect anyone who has experienced or witnessed trauma.

Trauma can come from many experiences including violence, abuse, accidents, medical events, sudden loss, disasters, or other deeply distressing situations. And the effects are not always visible from the outside.

PTSD is not weakness.
It is not “being dramatic.”
It is not something someone can simply “get over.”

This PTSD Awareness Month, let’s replace judgment with compassion and remind those living with trauma that they are not alone.

Some people are very good at looking “fine.” They go to work. They answer messages. They take care of others. They keep moving. But being functional is not the same as being okay.

This is your reminder to check in on the people who seem strong, busy, capable, or “always fine.” They may be carrying more than they show. A simple check-in can make a difference:

“How are you really doing?”
“I’m here if you want to talk.”
“You don’t have to handle everything alone.”

Access to mental health care can be life-changing and for many people, Medicaid is part of that stability.

NAMI has raised concerns about new Medicaid work reporting requirements and the potential impact on people living with mental illness. Mental health conditions are often cyclical, meaning someone may be stable and working during one period, then struggling significantly during another.

When people are in crisis or managing worsening symptoms, complicated paperwork and reporting requirements can become another barrier to care.

At NAMI Lehigh Valley, we believe people should be able to get and keep the care they need, especially when they are struggling.

Mental health care should be easier to access, not harder.

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to an end, the work does not stop here.

Awareness matters, but awareness is only the beginning. Creating impact means continuing the conversations, challenging stigma, advocating for mental health, and making sure people know support is available.

Every story shared, every conversation started, and every voice raised helps remind someone that they are not alone. Let’s carry that message beyond May.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder that silence can make people feel alone. What will you choose over silence?

Maybe it’s connection.
Maybe it’s compassion.
Maybe it’s support.
Maybe it’s community.
Maybe it’s conversation.

Whatever word you choose, the message is the same: stigma grows in silence, but healing begins in community and every one of us can help create a community where mental health is talked about with compassion, honesty, and hope.

If you or someone you love is looking for support, NAMI Lehigh Valley is here to help connect you with local resources, education, and community. Learn more at https://www.nami-lv.org

At NAMI Lehigh Valley, we believe that education is one of the most powerful tools for reducing stigma and building supportive communities.

That's why we're sharing this free Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training opportunity.

Most of us know what to do if someone is having a heart attack, but would you know how to respond if someone was experiencing a panic attack or showing signs of a mental health crisis?

Mental Health First Aid teaches participants how to recognize warning signs, respond appropriately, and connect people with support when they need it most.

Free Adult MHFA certification trainings are being offered throughout Pennsylvania, including several upcoming sessions in Allentown.

Learning how to support someone in a mental health crisis could make a difference in the life of a friend, family member, coworker, or neighbor.

For dates, locations, and registration information, please see the flyer below.
