This haiku is a great example of famed poet, Natsume Sōseki's, work. The poem highlights not only beautiful images of nature, but also the duality of light and dark, life and death. ✨

The extinguished lamp suggests the end or absence of light and vision, both literally and metaphorically. The second line notes the stars shining brighter once the viewer is in the dark, symbolizing new beginnings, a brighter tomorrow, and inspiration in times of loss and confusion with no direction visible ahead. Lastly, the third line brings attention to the window frame, which can been seen as a symbol for obstacles, transitions, and a literal window through which we can view the world and whatever lies beyond. ⭐

Tondabayashi's Jinaimachi is one of the Historic Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings in Osaka, Japan. The town maintains blocks from the Sengoku period (15th-16th centuries), along with approximately 150 structures from the Edo, Meiji, and Taisho periods preserved in this beautiful site. Jinaimachi was built in collaboration with Koshoji Temple in Kyoto, with a branch temple–Koshoji Betsuin–which still stands at the heart of the town today 🌸

Through the BTSCC Student Exchange program, Bethlehem students have been provided the amazing opportunity to visit this historically significant location which still acts as a home for artisans of various trades–including small businesses dedicated to pottery, soba-making, baking & confectionery, tea ceremony, art, textiles, carpentry, flower arrangement, and more! 👘
